Snow news shocking

It's not really newsworthy when we get it up here.

The problem is we never hear the end of it on the news when you get it down there.

LOL you are right on there -

I saw the 1963 winter programme too. Proves how pathetic and alarmist the met office are making such a fuss about a few inches of snow. Supposedly 2 to 5 cm more to fall here but there's been b****r all. Still the same inch or two on the ground and roads are clear.

With all the reporting I was expecting drifts up to my arse not up to a sparrow's arse.

Depends where you are though Suz, round here the snow is up o about 3 inches and the roads are lethal and that includes the dual carriageway. Couple that with the amount of people who don't know how to drive in the snow.

Looks like Staffordshire are just better at organising themselves. Gritters have been round loads of roads here.

Indeed, nothing round here's been gritted.

Just seen an orange flashing light go passed
So it was either a Martian landing, or less likely a gritter.

Feel sorry for those of us on crutches. Trapped in the house as I really don't want to go arse over boob and end up in plaster again. I attempted to get out of the door - that's about as far as I got

I have even more respect for those permanently on crutches!

you need a sledge

It was suggested to my husband followed by some words I can't repeat on here

Are you able to weight your bad leg yet Kelly? I know it's bad enough on crutches in this weather when you can weight both, let alone one.

My crutches have stayed in the car since a week ago and I'm back using a walking stick but even that's precarious in the snow and ce.

I'm in my aircast boot since coming out of plaster but the physio has said not to put full weight on yet.

Indeed, I have just sharpened the end of my crutch.

EDIT: That does not sound right.

Don't blame you for staying in then. I remember when I broke my ankle and couldn't weight that foot, going out in the rain was a nightmare. Can't imagine what it would have been like if it had snowed!

I was contemplating bottle caps on the bottom of them but the similar response to the sledge suggestion occured. Laminate flooring you see

How about some of those slip on grippy things for ice? Get them in a large size and they should fit over a cast. Yak trax I think they're called. They're not supposed to damage floors to much either.

Christ knows how the "snowy" countries go in...

Red and amber warning for what???? A couple of inches at best..

FWIW, 45 départements in France are on Orange Alert, there are no buses or trams running in Paris and Nancy today and 40% of flights at Roissy and Orly airports are cancelled for what is, in general, 3 to 10cm of snow.

I should note that the buses near me in London have been running all day.

Anybody watch Winterwatch about the winter of 1963, now that really was snow

Was there ...saw that ...got the wooly jumper.

Dad had to dig us out of the house as the snow was up to the rafters, it was very very cold and windy.

No school for several weeks (yay), Snow was on average 3-4 feet deep in most places near home.

Not good for my dad...he was a carpenter in the building trade.:(

We survived but an older couple near us did not.

The media coverage just ratchets it up beyond reality sometimes, just a personnel view.

I can just about remember this winter. Snow lying for around three months before finally thawing

Steam locomotives still in widespread use on Britain's railways, locomotives in tandem fighting through snowdrifts. Locomotives abandoned being overwhelmed by snow

I was born in October 1963. Maybe that's why I'm never cold :lol::lol:

We have some at last:) finally got the chance to go out and clean my dirty trainers:D

Saw the programme about 1963.
My dad was also very fond of regaling us with tales of the winter of 1947 too :)

Only 1cm on our roads - after the plough

Not everyone has snow issues ;)

When I lived in Toronto, a bus we were travelling on during the winter had to go up a steep road, bus driver spent about 2 minutes just spinning the tires and not getting anywhere.....he then had the idea of every passenger moving to the back of the bus.........instant traction and off we went.

There's also a really steep hill in Edmonton coming out of the river valley into downtown, it's a major one way road but for some reason it's nearly always the last to be cleared. In the snow & ice over the years, I've seen car's & SUV's stuck in the middle of the hill ruining their tires trying to get up...the only escape road is just past half way, but few people make it that far. The problem I've noticed though is that they drive real slow onto the hill, they just have no momentum so get stuck almost immediately. It's quote comical to watch, until you see some cars just giving up and backing down the road with not a care who is behind or at their side.

Anyway, we've got a predicted 15cms falling today onto the already 30+cms on the ground.
