i have just got a osx 10.5.6 mac and want to put snow leopard on it.
i was wondering if i install it will i lose all my files

No, should be fine. But be prepared that some software does not work on Snow Leopard yet, like Nikons View NX

There are three options: Wipe and install, install keeping old files and install not keeping old files. So you can chose the middle one

As above, you'll be fine with the same caveats.

However, I'm guessing that it's a 2nd hand Mac as it's got Leopard on it, it is an Intel powered Mac isn't it? I'm pretty certain Snow Leopard is incompatible with the older Power PC Macs.

That'll happily run snow leopard.

Here's my advice, use carbon copy cloner to backup your whole system as it is to an external hard drive, make sure it's guid formatted with osx joirnaled partition. Then boot your mac from this hard drive. Install snow leopard on the external and check that everything is working, use it for a few days.

If all is well wipe the hard drive. Reback up then install snow leopard on your mac hard drive. Leave the backup there for a few weeks, if all is well you can reuse the HD as you wish.

I did this and realised that I couldn't use the spotlight search function in entourage with snow leopard and also flash cs3 and cs4 kept crashing on me. As a result I am still using leopard
