Snow Leopard is Here - Coming Friday 28th August

All done, and in 33 minutes! All is well, can't say I've noticed anything different yet but I'm sure things are all the better for it in the engine room.

Which install option did you go for Marc? Archive and install or a total fresh un?

No idea Tomas, just got the option to install.

Sorry mate, I should have elaborated, I shoulda asked if you wiped your drive first or did you install on top of all your applications and documents/files?

Ah, I see. No, it's an Upgrade DVD, so just installed as is.

Fantastic! Cheers mate, mines in the post, should have it by Monday.
I was curious as I'm a little outta space at the moment and waiting to get a new HD. Ta very much for lettin me know

No worries, glad to help.......I think. :D

Ya have! It seems you've successfully performed a basic install without having to back anything up beforehand, IIRC when Leopard was released, there seemed to be a fair bit of trouble with folk loosing all their data, the archive and install option basically buggered some folk up.

Snow Leopard appears to be just an upgrade or at least an upgrade that doesn't need to start from scratch. If it did need a fresh drive then I'd have to wait until my new HD comes, I've barely got enough room for another three to four shoots left :'(

Well I'm glad I didn't know that before I did the install, I'd have been having kittens! I still need to sort out my external hard drive as it's still read only.

If you install Snow Leopard straight away it will free up a load of space (about 8GB in my case) so it may be worth doing anyway if you are running low on space!

Started with the older imac - no probs. And I'm now upgrading the lappy. But I had a small prob when first trying to install Snowy on the newer imac. It transpires that when the local Apple service centre formatted the replacement hard drive they failed to make it Journaled. And it needs to be in order to install an operating system. Thinking about it, they probably switched off journalling after installing Leopard. Can I now switch off journalling? Is there any kind person out there that knows what they're doing - unlike me?

My copy should arrive soon. It's been 'despatched' for a few days but it'll be tuesday or wednesday now because of the bank holiday.

For those who have installed it - is there a new version of Xcode? (IDE).

Got mine this morning, installed over Tiger no bother, I had to shell out for the box set, but so far the speed is way better, search is like lightning now, iPhoto now reads D90 RAW files and will format my SD card for me.
Colours seem better now, but this might just be a flat panel upgrade - had a look under setting and this box is ticked.
Anyway very impressed, the only thing I had to update was my copy of little snitch.

Had to switch off 64 bit as Parallels Desktop won't load. Back to 32 bit :(

Insalled Snow Leopard last night on the MacBook.

Apple apps feel like they boot faster, but not by much.
Spaces seems to work a little better with PS.
New Exposé is wonderful as is Dock Exposé.
Not sure I can feel any difference in Finder, but I haven't had the chance to try live previews yet.
Stack navigation is awesome, much better than going into a stack only to have the stack open a Finder window.
Quicktime upgrade now does video screen capture :woot: I wanted a free app for this about a week ago and now I have one built into the OS!

I miss my British flag in the menu bar :(
I have one negative point, if I wanted to look at a picture off the forum (or anywhere on the web) in PS, I could drag it out of the browser and drop it on the PS icon in the dock. This would either open the pic in PS or Launch PS then open the pic. When finished I could close the picture and it would just go away.
This no longer works, now I have to drag the picture onto my desktop, then into PS which leaves a copy on my desktop that I have to delete afterwards.
It's a minor point but something I do quite often.

I did use the option of better performance when on the power adapter and better battery life when running on the battery. These options have now gone and I can only hope Apple set it up the way I like it.

Overall, with limited use I'm happy but would like to see a couple of my options return in 10.6.1.

Oh forgot, right click menu's on dock icons look very useful indeed :D

Dont know if its been posted yet or not, but if you still have tiger you can still use the £25 'upgrade' box and do a clean install with it.

It wouldn't be legal though.

why ever not?

It's not an 'Upgrade' dvd that is being distributed. Nor is it an Install dvd. It's a Snow Leopard dvd that can be used both as an upgrade product and for clean installs.

There's no legal issue as every user will have a 'qualifying product' in the ms :spit: sense as SL only works in intel macs so recent copies of OS-X will be owned by the user.

Any ideas if you can get snow leopard from an Apple authorized reseller? I live in Cardiff and that's all we have, no official Apple store.

Thanks for the link, was just curious thou if I could get it from the shop as I have to go into town today and I have got the evening spare to install it and sort everything out.
If not I will get it posted out.
Cheers

You should be able to, maybe give the shop a ring before you go in.

You really don't need an evening to install it, it really is a case of insert DVD, press install and come back 30 - 45 mins later and it is installed.

Good idea, will give them a call in a bit before heading in to save me wandering all over town!
I have a load of junk on my laptop which I want to sort out before I do the upgrade so that's why I have set aside the evening as its going to take awhile!

You could try a purple shop if you have one near by am sure they have some. (Pc World)

Well made it into the shop, but they are sold out and are not having stock into end of next week.
Will try pc world tomorrow and if no luck will order with apple themselves.
Thanks for the help guys

I heard from a lawyer on the mac-forum it would break the eula bot not a right lot else

Breaching the EULA is breach of contract. Breaching a contract is then considered as illegal as contracts are mutual agreements and should be respected and fulfilled by all parties involved. They can take you to court, and you'll lose, because you accepted the EULA to install the software.

The EULA may also contain provisions which are law then, by violating them, you are violating the law and hence acting illegal.

You have to accept the EULA to install the software, and often ( though I can't recall with the OS X install) you have to select your region before the EULA is shown so that a EULA written for your locale's specific laws is presented.

Finally got my copy of Snow Leopard in the post today. Installed without any problems, recovered about 6gig of hard drive space. So far no issues, fingers crossed

got mine in the post today too, all upgraded in under an hour with no problems at all - not that i expected any.

Same here, installed easily, no issues and got back plenty of disk space.

You may not be getting back as much space as you first think, the new software measures the gigabyte differently to the old version.
My laptop is advertised as having a 320 gb hard drive, but only 298 GB show up,but with the new software it should now show up as 320.
Hope this makes sense.

I think you may have misunderstood something. Or I have.

This new operating system takes is smaller and takes up less space on your hard drive. Thereby releasing approx 9GB or whatever.

Hard drive manufacturers quote unformatted drive capacity. Once formatted, the 'real world' drive capacity will be a little less. It sounds like your drive is 320 GB unformatted (as the manufacturer would describe it) but 298 GB formatted - which sounds about right.

The latest release of Parallels Desktop, build 4.0.3846 released today, works under 64 bit. Run update to download it.

Mine has been dispatched today but it doesn't seem to have caught users' imaginations, is it really worth it for 6GB or so of space?

Well, if you've paid for it you may as well use it.
I'm glad I have it, but if I didn't then I wouldn't be massively bothered.
It definitely won't hurt.
