Across Yorkshire WHY?....:thinking:

If the teachers lost pay for not turning up? would those schools still have closed?
 
Don't blame the teachers, it's not down to them.

Usually it's on safety grounds, ice on the premises= claims potential...... the world's safety mad you know!!

Either that or it's heat, if the school cannot reach temperature then it shuts..

I didn't blame the teachers :thinking: I asked a question and you didn't answer it :)
 
It's not all how the media paint it, my son's school in North Yorkshire was open it always is, however public transport fell apart and so very few pupils turned up, I guess other schools feel its not worth it due to the lack of well gritted roads and public transport that can cope - school buses are a low priority.

In that case no if the Teachers didn't get paid then it wouldn't make any difference as it's not their decision.

Isn't that kind of what i said :shrug:
 
Okay, so to help me understand the reason schools close :thinking: it is on H&S reasons and someone makes the decision early enough to announce on the radio at 7am. :shrug:

Yep - either that or as Biko suggested if there are transportation problems then that can decide the call too....

Head of the school makes the decision if the school make meet curtain levels of safety, based on temperature and ground conditions weather they can get enough staff in to man the school etc.

Schools should have a written policy for what to do in severe weather, as I mentioned my son's school state that they will stay open which is probably rare. most other school will take advice from LEA if severe weather is predicted, and act on that - advice is usually relayed early to give parents as much notice as possible. The biggest problem is not so much the school but as I mentioned before transport, most of the school buses are knackered ones that have been used on day to day bus routes and taken out of service as they are past their best, they are not reliable, and bus companies take priority to buses on main routes. Transport companies usually communicate with schools and it appears many of them including my son's informed schools that they will not run buses which increases the pressure on HT's to close the school.

Most teachers do turn up if they can and use the day to do work that is used on inset days; plan timetables course curriculum etc.

There are H&S issues but if the policy is up to date then school are ok. I am a Governor and years ago we had this crazy mandate from the union that the caretaker was in which said that on no account was the caretaker to grit paths as this meant the school was liable if someone slipped because the school was aware there was a danger by gritting; if someone subsequently slipped then the onus was on the school for not gritting properly, so don't grit then they can't do anything! We just rewrote the policy to say that all effort will be made to grit but school not liable etc.
