I am off to SNO!zone MIlton Keynes tommorow, I been asked to take to photographs on the slope for a ski club, I intend to use my Canon 40D withan EF 100-400mm F4.5-6L IS USM lens. I would be grateful for any thoughts on how to capture action shots on the slopes. I am aware that snow tends to look gray and you need to increase the exposure to compensate. I intend to shoot RAW and sort out white balance etc using Photoshop.

I don't have much advice on how to set up to take the photo, but i just want to add that although the snow is white, the lighting in the SNOzone isn't the greatest. It always seems a bit dull.

Good luck, i'd be interested in seeing some of the end results.

I Was at Chill Factor E in manchester earlier in the year covering the local guides outing and i was shooting at ISO 1000 - 1250, 1/100 - 1/160 F3.5 @ 400mm to get anything acceptable.

Speak to the reception staff and see if you can get on the snow with your camera like i did. Means you are not at full zoom and may be able to keep the lens shorter and brighter to help with handholding.

I'm not sure they would actually let you on the slope to take photos unless you have some kind of pass, you may have to take them from behind the perspex screen which is very dull.

Few nice words, and a business card, along with a promise to keep at the base of the slope / out of the way worked wonders for me ;)

Just print off one of these, add your passport photo and stake your claim:

Ah must give that a go then :)

you can get out on the slope, but you will need to call them in advance and be able to prove you have 5mill PLI on your policy. I think you need to wear a high vis vest too.

LOL we were thinking of going tomorrow, as we normally do one Friday a month! We need our hits until we're off to Austria in Jan! :D

Look forward to the photos, if you have permission. :)

I did take a few from behind the perspex window in the lounge area and they were not particularly wonderful (I have a talent for understatement by the way), so if you can get on the snow that's the way to go. Looking forward to seeing some shots.

They have a similar ski run in Dubai (really) and I couldn't get any decent shots there either.

Anthony.

FWIW as you are probably there now. Whenever I've been there and tried to get on the slope I've needed to phone in advance and show my PL insurance certificate as well as filling out the media form.

I would also not bother with the 100-400, you need fast glass and I've found that a wideangle works much better as there isn't all that much room in there...
