snaps vs photographs

It's a pity that no one spotted such an obvious insult earlier. There is a happy band of brothers who don't apologise when they are wrong and don't retract when they cannot substantiate their comments. I'd have thought that one of them who had have been happy to chime in.

Rofl! ... Oh, no, I mean I'm laughing.

Well I for one am lost on this post Russ

Agreed.

I think often when someone refers to anothers pic as a snap it's a bit derogarory, usually said deliberately.

When I had my Exhibition at the end of last year I left a comments book, and amongst some lovely comments there was one from a 'photographer' (as he described himself) saying 'there are some nice snaps here'. I wanted to find him and do physical harm as I just thought condescending fatherless son :naughty:

I must admit I have used the term once on the forum but that's because it genuinely was a snap taken from a holiday used to illustrate a theme, not because I felt it wasn't worthy of comment as I did suggest ways it could be improved. But it can be a difficult term to use, as I experienced.

I think a snap can also turn out to be a great photo...
I think a photo is a visual record obviously thats very simplistic but... Someone on here posted "snaps" of thier kids that they thought were not very accomplished. I actually liked the photos thought they were quite nice. Also someone in the family may love the photo in which case its a success.
Also a great "photograph" I mean truly great , may also have been snapped. The vietnam photo of the child running, you know the one, everyone does. it may well have been taken from the hip for all i know and surely its nothing to do with exposure or aperture. in fact it would be great if it had been taken on a polaroid ...imho

Wow what a thread! Check out the website below. Found photos... all snap shots but powerful in their own way. Photography is all about context. Do not agree snapshots are just taken. Every photograph ... even badly composed ones - can be read. I don't think the question can be answered...

Think this maybe what they are on about.

Thanks Carl Ogden, i wont say what i think of your comment cos everyone prob thinks the same.

I think he meant that shooting in JPEG doesn't mean you haven't given due consideration to it being a photograph.

IE shooting in RAW isn't a requirement for it being a photo rather than a snap (Carl likes the JPEG you see).

But probably didn't mean to put it in such a blunt way ;)

I'm right aren't I Carl?

Everything I take is a snap. If I keep it, it becomes a photograph. :)

A snap can be a photograph, and a photograph can be a snap.
But I'm guessing we are talking more than technicalies here.

IMO the 'Snap' is the photograph where it is all about the subject, and little consideration for how the subject is being presented has been made.

The classic landscape example. 'Ooooh, that's a nice view *raises camera to eye* SNAP! done.
Or 'Ooooh that's a nice view, *raises camera to eye* SNAP! Actually, it would look nicer i viewed though this gateway with those rustic gateposts in view *moves position* SNAP! done

Both are snapshots, one will probably be more of a photograph.

MOST of the great magnum documentary photographers 'snapped' away, but I defy anyone to tell me they are not amazingly inspirational photographers

So the answer is that it's purely subjective to the viewer :)

Well I for one am lost on this post Russ

Any chance of a rewording? A link to an example? Or am I just having a thicky moment (again)

DD

Here's the chain of logic (and events) to try and make clear how I see things:
1) in a thread that was closed before Garry79 could apologise for a remark he couldn't substantiate, I suggested that his image was more suitable for the family album than a wall;
2) in this thread, I opined that people on this form use the word "snap" and the phrase "family album" as terms to insult the tog and their image, at no time did I suggest that I used these terms in that way;
3) Garry79 put 1 and 1 together and posted a reply in this thread in which he attempted to demonstrate the contradiction of my actions in the two threads; and
4) in response to his sarcastic post, I expressed my surprise that one of the happy band of brothers (who don't apologise when wrong and don't retract remarks they cannot substantiate) had not leapt upon my post in Garry79's original thread and pointed out what an insulting remark I had made.

I hope this clears the matter up for you DD. After all, you get more than your fair share of attention from the happy band of brothers.

No Russ, you were caught out. Don't try and wriggle out of it.
You used the term, then either in a fit of stupidity, memory loss or pure trolling genius (which would suggest you knew what you had done would provoke this reaction), you declared the term to be an insult.

This is your last warning for being disruptive and causing tension.

I, and the other staff are getting sick of the RTM's about you, and also FROM you, needlessly reporting others who you claim to be targeting you.

Just drop it. End of, I'm getting ****ed off with the whole saga.

Hi one and all,

it's me .. the one that asked the original question and the replies have been really interesting.

Can I please request that replies stick to answering the question ?

Play nice or I will close the thread and that would be a shame as there have been lots of varied opinions which make good reading.

thanks

June
