Yes
Having got an amber warning on my old HDD. I started looking at getting a new one. This is only used as n image back-up and for holding a few games, and Itunes.

But reading some kind conflicting reviews, as to how slow they are for writing, and now i`m a bit lost.

So if any of you kind peeps could throw some advice my way, i`d appreciate it.

Looking at 4tb if it makes any difference ;)

Genreally hdd are governed by the spin speed of the drive, only ssd's have different read and write times.

7200rpm drives will read and write slightly faster than a 5400rpm.

If you want real speed, get an ssd, but a 4tb one will set you back a fair whack.

A spinning HDD will be slow compared to an SSD/NVME , if its an IDE HDD it will be slower than a SATA .
If its only used for image back up , I Tunes and Games does it matter , I have just had a quick look on CCL and they don't sell an IDE drive now.
Just buy a SATA drive and if you don't have SATA connections in your PC you can get an SATA>IDE cable or just use an external USB HDD .

My aging HDD is a WD Blue 3tb and only running 5400, but the speed is fine for me. System drive is SSD

TBH unless you're writing a lot of data, it will mostly pop the files into cache and slow write speeds won't be very obvious.

Thanks mate
For once, Google didn't really help. It seems like a lot of drives are going shingle, nowadays.

Yes, the delays are when the drive empties its cache. This is why people got upset when WD silently changed some of its Red drives, intended for NAS use, to SMR.

Yes, if you're paying for a red drive then you should get one, rather than a consumer drive.

So then, for image processing, and then saving. I'm guessing SMR will be ok.

Basically looking at either, WD blue or Seagate barracuda.

If its all backed up so its just junk then use a 2.5 inch external for peanuts.
i bought a 4tb one of someone here a year back and its great for going away with tons of films on it

All sorted now.

Thanks for the input, peeps (y)
