Does anyone else find it a bit asinine that it is illegal to smoke in a car with a child in it yet it's not illegal to smoke whilst pregnant?

Loads of odd rules and laws.

A 16 year old can smoke while his father is in the car with him. The father is not allowed to do this though and can be fined.

I don't think smokers really give a hoot about their health and the health of others do they?

Though said 16 year old needs a clip round the ear'ole whilst dad points out that the legal age to smoke is 18

an enforcement officer might get a slap if he booked a "pregnant" woman for smoking only to find he had made a mistake lol
:D

Let's face it, the main reason that smoking hasn't been made illegal is due to the vast amount of tax the government receive from it, although it could be argued that the loss of tax income from smoking could be offset by the savings the NHS would make by (eventually) not having to treat smoking related health issues.

If tobacco/smoking was "invented" tomorrow it would be banned, the same could probably be said for alcohol too but that's a whole different kettle of vodka..... I mean fish.

Total tax take on Fags is around 27 billion, around a third of nhs budget. Unless a third of all nhs spending is due to smoking related issues then Smokers are subsidizing the nhs.

I understood 18 is the legal age of buying tobacco, not smoking it

True enough.
But buying it, being sold it, being supplied with it by someone else, and having the police confiscate it if caught smoking it in ANY public place (indoor and outdoor) if they so desire, one can see where the aim is. :-)
And said teenager still deserves a thick ear :D

Hence the use of "could" and "offset" instead of "would completely pay for" ;)

That's the Law for you but the Nanny state will soon have you happy again:p

I suppose it comes down to the fact it's hard to legislate for an unborn baby who isn't classed as an actual person until they are born. That's why there's no offence of murder when someone causes a woman to 'lose' a baby - rather it's 'destruction of a child'.

To think people were allowed to smoke in hospital beds up until the '70's.

Can you imagine the kerfuffle if you tried that now? :runaway:

Nothing to do with the number of ministers (including DC) who are smokers!!! ;)

As an ex 30 a day smoker I am amazed vaping is allowed to be advertised on TV, it encourages smoking imho

Most people make the jump from cigarettes to vaping, not vice versa.

I agree, many do go from fags to them, but why would you allow adverts for what you could term as 21st century smoking?

Its the advertising I don't get, you are still getting addicted to a drug, legally!

As I say, I am an ex smoker so maybe that don't help.

Smoking is deeply antisocial and harmful to everyone around the smoker. When will they get that much?!
In some ways alcohol causes more problems than smoking - every weekend night I hear drunken chavs outside my flat from about midnight to 4am and often smashing bottles, kicking things and generally creating nuisance - also witness on a typical sunday the number of shop windows that are smashed the previous night.

Do you still Vape?
No. I vaped for a couple of weeks. Found the hit at the lightest setting to strong, thought it was daft to still stand outside in the rain and cold. I just quit which was easy as I was already off the cigarettes.

However to be fair, I'll always be a smoker. I can go weeks or months without, but if I have an evening out and are with other smokers and don't have to drive; I.e. Have a drink, I may have one. But then not have another for months. I'm ok with that.

Come may I think it is vaping is going to be hit hard by new laws pushed by the EU (from persuasion by tobacco) even though many health publications / doctors/ scientists & the NHS has now said it's 90% better than smoking and will soon be supplying them via prescription.... funnily supplied by the american tobacco company..

All the mods and liquids are being hit the cig a likes that the tobacco company's all own will be fine.

I find it completely ironic that you can't smoke in the car with a kid but can drive with the windows open!!

As said its a "to buy" age limit, there's never been a legal age to smoke

This... I wonder how many cases of heart & lung disease are misdiagnosed as being due to smoking when there could be a genetic link?

Doesn't mean it can't be a trigger. The body needs oxygen to heal, grow and stay healthy. If your inhaling smoke, that's less oxygen your body gets and reduces the body's ability to function properly.

I see ads every day for nicorette spray/gum/patches.

And the doctor also smoking while he examined you.

Just popping outside for a fag.
I'll give it some thought. :D
Just don't say this to any Americans in the room. Just don't! Trust me on this, I speak from experience.

I hear ya.
I did that too.
Not quite so bad when said by a woman but still raised many an eyebrow

Easy enough to tell.Whats the relationship between heart and lung disease in smokers to non-smokers? unless you think that being genetically predisposed to heart and lung issues also predisposes you to smoking

Exactly one of my best friends, 6ft8 black American, punched a guy straight in the face when he asked for a fag when we were out. He was very apologetic when I taught him the queens English, although didn't think my pun was funny :p

:eek::runaway:

Haha! honestly, can you imagine what would happen if they did that today?

"Resus to bed three!"

"Doctor, he started with a minor moan which quickly developed into a critical whinge!

*stubs fag out*

"Stand clear..."

:D

Although the father of a school friend who worked in the film industry in America during the '70s asked a workmate "Can I bum a fag?" meaning "Can I cadge a ciggy?" and got the reply "Hell, man - this is Hollywood, knock yourself out!"
