I have just heard from next month it becomes illegal to smoke in your own car if any of your passengers are under the age of 18,[PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] me you won't be able to scratch your own arse soon without a fine.

I don't personally smoke and don't want to promote smoking but I think this Government has gone just a little to far and in my eyes it is just another revenue make, if they was so bothered and concerned about the dangers of smoking they would ban cigarettes full stop.

they are banning cigerettes full stop... they are just not stupid enough to do it in one law one day..... Think about it.. penny will drop soon enough :)

Given how much it costs the NHS, the grief it eventually brings, the more they do to make it harder, the better. It killed my next door neighbour and he was a big bloke who weighed next to nothing when he died. Someone I know calculated that her nan could have bought a house instead of spending so much on smoking. oops..better stop now, I feel a rant coming on!

A pointless and unnecessarily law in my opinion. Like the police will have enough time to enforce that. I guess just like they do with mobile phones etc.

Does anyone really think that the people stupid enough to do that, care about a law against it?

No, I don't think so.
Tax from cigarettes is an enormous source of revenue.

Again no. The income from tobacco tax far outweighs the NHS spend.

A difficult one this. I'm all for stopping smoking (I speak as someone who has never smoked, so perhaps I should not speak at all on this subject) and the effect of smoke in confined spaces is well known, if only at general level - remember the smell of your clothes after a night in the pub before the ban in public places?

I feel the effect on young children must be bad and therefore it should be stopped. However, I'm not sure it will be much of a deterrent. It does not appear to have worked with mobile phones where the penalty is much more severe (I accept I don't know how many people would be using their mobiles if there was no ban, but I still see quite a lot)

It would be interesting to see an estimate of the cost to the NHS due to smoking versus the revenue from the tobacco industry, but if it were a purely an economic question then alcohol would have to be looked too.

So will free thinking and speech...and alcohol....diseases will be cured...others will appear....eventually.

You still believe in free speech? haha... sorry but :)

Still a right in law if not in practice....ergo no ban is in place.

Why can't they just deal with it under child abuse laws. Do we really need more?

do you think that means your home will follow if you have kids?

I don't understand how you can be in full control of your car while smoking anyway. You can't grip the wheel properly with one of your hands if you've got a cigarette in it.

and how will they tell. look for plumes of smoke.... hmm well lets see.. Vaping ( which creates big clouds ) is excluded from the ban ( not getting into any debate on vaping simply because theres far to much untruths in the press by those who stand to lose money ( and the recent total turnaround by the two faced BMA and UK health etc ) suffice to say that there are pretty much zero risk from passive vaping ( nothing is absolute but its cleaner than the air you breathe in most streets ).
so my point is if someone is vaping in a car it will create to the passerby what looks like plumes of smoke and there are far to many ignorant people out there who either wont know the difference, or much like Police and photography rights when shooting in public, there will be coppers who haven't a clue about vaping being excluded and there will no doubt be stories that come along of vapers getting stopped and attempted fines put on them.

source? i know a few people that have been pulled for using a phone. the police cant be everywhere at once hence some will get away with it, but its a reasonable deterrent if caught a couple times and points added.
Seems worse now then ever to me. We now have people looking down on there laps texting. Seen how bad this is on the motorway? f*****g idiots in HGV's swerving into the hard-shoulder you overtake them and there f*****g texting.

i do 2 hours on motorway each day and dont really see more than a couple a week, if any to be honest. but then im looking at the road and not what others are doing ;)

total rubbish.
have you seen an ecig?

whats total rubbish about it? You mean you can't see when someone has a cigarette in their hand? Honestly if thats true you shouldn't be driving for other reasons.

Yes, I know what an e-cig is an looks like ta. Presuming you can tell the difference between one and a real fag?

We make a point of looking when i'm in the car with my partner in the passenger seat. This is a massive issue and see it multiple times every journey.

Maybe that's true of the main brands which have been tested, but what about the stuff that you can buy on the web or down the market (assuming you can buy it down the market). There was a fuss about counterfeit cigarettes containing even more harmful chemicals than usual, so who's to say e-cigs won't be similarly affected.

A warning has been given for this post

no what I'm saying if you actually bother to read is that you wouldn't be able to tell if someone was using an ecig over a cig in the car. clearly your incapable of understanding what I said so maybe I need to explain it to you like I'm talking to a 5 year old in small words and sentences that you might understand.
given that many ecigs are made to look like a cigarette and even glow at the end and both produce clouds of what looks like smoke ( because its not smoke from an ecig its vapour ) then unless you were standing within a few feet of said person you would not be able to tell the difference
understand now or do I have to do pictures for you as well?

there used to be a guy on my local train station who vaped, damn strawberry scented stuff made my nose sting..

Pictures please it might be more coherent than your words.

Personally i have absolutely zero difficulty in telling the difference.

I walk past an e-cig shop on the way into town and it smells like a sweet shop. Certainly less offensive than tobacco smoke, but I could imagine it would be quite nausea inducing if stuck in a room with several vapers all sucking on different flavours.

This threads is a fine example of double standards of some tp posters. Many would quite happily see parents of overweight children prosecuted for child cruelty yet complain when a far more serious issue is addressed. All in the name of personal freedom

I think this is what Dean is eluding to...

Very difficult to tell the difference unless you are next to the person 'smoking' it.

Of course we can all spot these..

So, you get pulled over and show the copper it's an e-cig.

Is this really a big deal? Big enough that we should throw our hands in the air and say "stuff the children, some drivers might be slightly inconvenienced once in a while"?

I got that. ;) even then its not that hard to tell

but even if the odd person does get stopped for vapping with kids in the car does it matter? A two second conversation and you're on your way again. It won't be the only law that causes people to be stopped, checked and then allowed to move on
