'Smoke On The Water'....stuck in my head after photographing incence

thanks to wingnut for the tutorial.

I used a black background (cloth) which didn't help overall i think, i am aiming to use a piece of black card and a snoot for my flash next time i think but here's what i came up with a few hours ago (tinkered in photoshop obviously)...thoughts?

The abstract pattern looks like an ethereal skeleton!

I like it - but I think there should be more subject matter to really make it work...as an exercise in photographing smoke, it works.

thank you i'd probably crop it fairly tight if it was to be just a macro abstract style shot, so there's much less black

the pattern isnt particularly engaging or interesting one this one, also, the smoke doesnt stand out enough against the background. one more thing, with the amount of smoke shots on the net, i wouldnt bother taking the time to water mark.

good god people are picky on here, i think that's the last picture im posting.

im not looking to have my pictures slated basically every time i post them. I know i put post comments but i didnt think people would jump to destroy ever shot i post :/

But it's not really slating it. I wouldn't take it to personally, just stick it down to experience and give it another go. Build on it, if it's not an interesting pattern, then think of ways to make it more interesting, maybe use a small fan or something. If it doesn't stand out from the background, think of something that will make it stand out form the background, put it in the negative. See, quite constructive when you read it.

Though if you are going to react to criticism like you did in post #6 for god's sake don't submit anything to InDepth Critique - you'll be slashing your wrists by the 5th post. Maybe stick to FluffyKittens

Oh - and to keep it on-topic - i'd definitely try the negative of it, and lose the watermarking!

I've had some fun doing these. The smoke pens from maplins/rs work really well and give a fat smoke trail. Incense sticks seems to leave a thin, whispy trail which doesn't leave much to shoot.

That's actually quite constructive really.

I took several shots and discarded most, but sometimes you get some interesting results. Don't be afraid to try inversing the colours, layering a duplicate image and flipping one layer etc.
