Try and find an Orange San Francisco, best bang for buck phone ever made (I have one myself) and it was available for £89.95 at one point. It can be unlocked to any network easily and for free.

Phones4U are supposedly doing an upgrade instore on an HTC Wildfire S this weekend only. £99 I think and they give an additional £10 free airtime. I believe all you need for an upgrade is the sim and phone number from your old phone.

Froyo to Gingerbread didn't bring huge changes so isn't a requirement.
HTC has Sense running on top of Android which IMO is excellent and gives the 2.x android devices a more polished look and feel.
After having a Desire and Legend I'd never buy another HTC. The Desire lasted 6 months, and even though the Legend works, it needs a hard reset every week. From personal experience I'd not recommend an HTC. Furthermore the OP was after a <£100 mobile. Can he get an HTC running 2.2 for that???
