I'm looking to replace my iPhone 3G, and I think I have decided I want an actual smartphone, rather than Apple's latest offering.

I like the look of Android, so does anybody have any recommendations or advise on which ones to steer clear of?

Of the Androids I've had, the Samsung Galaxy S is pretty amazing.

I'm using the HTC HD7 (windows) and I quite like it. Does everything I need and I much prefer it to my Blackberry.

I think I'm going to get the Desire HD, poor battery life seems to be the only issue, but my iphone has the same problem anyway!

I have the HTC Desire and i love it!

My wildfire is dam good. I wanted a phone smaller than an iphone. The screen is not as high res but it does everything I need.

I have been through a raft of android phones and the one I have now settled on is the Samsung Galaxy S (16Gb).

Cracking phone, does everything I need and is nice and light too. Battery life with heavy use is about a day although with light use, and running the Juice Defender app, I can get 2- 3 days out of it.

Iphone4 is very good, have no issues with mine, does everything I need it to?

+1  It's the smoothest (in termes of UI) android I've ever had

Got myself a Motorola Milestone Android phone yesterday.

Have to say it's built like a brick poop house. Solid slidephone with full querty keyboard.

Have to say I reckon it's better looking and better built than the HTC desire which was my phone of choice origionaly.

The Motorola just feels like it was hand carved from a block of granite, none of that plasticy feel. The screen is a touch smaller than the desire.

Both of them are well up to the task.

I got mine from Carphone warehouse because all their phones now come simm and brand free. I've got mine on an contract of Orange but I've even tried my Tesco pay as you go simm and that works too.

Worth a look if nowt else. :D

The new Nokias are worth a look too as they are now faster and smarter, and have a track record which was better than any windows phone, but I havent had an android yet so couldnt compare but from what I have seen they do look good

I have a Desire HD. I use it very heavily and occasionally I've had to give it another charge during the day, after draining its overnight charge. It's not a problem for me.. I'm always near either a mains socket or car cig lighter socket for charging.
If charging is a problem, consider the plain Desire.. it's a superb phone. I just wanted the larger screen of the HD.

The Samsung Galaxy S feels cheap to me in comparison, and its GPS problems are well documented. I wouldn't get one if GPS/satnav is important to you.

I've had most of the smart phones around (the benefit of having a share in a phone shop) and I think my iPhone 4 still tops them all (especially when jailbroken).

The original Desire might be hard to get as it is now discontinued, the Galaxy S is nice, if a little expensive for an all plastic phone.

If you want a phone the is 90% of the Desire at about 30% of the cost, have a look at the ZTE Blade which is sold in the UK as the Orange San Francisco. It's almost identical spec, screen and memory wise, just the processor is one generation older using the same 600mhz processor as the Hero. It's easily unlock able and probably the best value for money Android phone ever sold.
