Hi,
Just signed up to ask (all) your expert advice on quite a specific topic.

I need to check bird nesting boxes on a fairly regular basis and, of course, opening boxes causes disturbance to the occupants.

I'm looking for a flexible, fibre-optic style extension (including a light, it's dark in there) that I can insert into a 4-5cm aperture and turn 90 degrees, viewing the contents of the box on my smartphone.

Does anyone have experience of this kind of kit?

Seems to be just the thing I'm looking for.

I shouldn't need more than, say, two hours of battery life to do my rounds. Hopefully it will hold up for that long.

With the device turned on continuously mine lasts for about 20 minutes. You can obviously turn it off between uses but then you have to fiddle with your phone to reconnect the WiFi connection, it’s not hard but just another step. The alternative would be an external USB “power bank” battery.

I could try out the turning on and off. We have around 60 boxes to check; each takes a few minutes and the actual time looking into the box is seconds only.

If not, the battery sounds like a good solution.

Our next round is in about 3 weeks. If I can get a setup together before that, I'll post on this thread and let you know how it all went.
 
I bought a cheap and cheerful one of ebay that just plugs into my phones usb connection :)

Sounds interesting. For my purposes both the phone and the camera would be hand-held. I'll look into that, thanks.

Soooo... got that cheap and cheerful one, and checked that my Android phone is USB OTG compatible.

Still can't get the endoscope to work though.

mrgubby, was that just plug and play, or did you install some kind of third-part driver on your phone?
