I must admit all this talk about a pocket knife multi tool, are we stuck in the 19th century or something? Even being very generous I could never classify it as a smart gadget.

The smart bit is when you need to fix something and you've got the tool in your pocket to do it !
You're not going to feel very clever If you're out and about and its at home wishing you brought it with you.

That doesn't make it a smart gadget, it makes it a smart person? Then again MacGyver wouldn't need one
It does but the point is gadgets don't have to be smart to be useful. A simple map and come compass is the most useful tool for landscape photography.

Fully agree that they are useful tools (besides a camera and tripod) but gadgets they are not.
They can be when combined with a torch, smart phone or some other device etc then it's definitely a gadget !
