Small and dangerous I said to my friend, your not safe in it, would she listen and the car kept breaking down as well. Well! she came out of a side road and was too slow and bang another car hit her and the Smart Car was smashed to bits, not a scratch on my friend. The other car was a BMW, £7000 was the damages and my friend said right away it was her fault. She has only bought a bigger smart car, I give up.:(
The trouble is there is around here an older generation that do drive too slow and buy small cars like the Smart to park easier and are cheap to run. One of my friends have just been forced to give up 98years old she was, the last straw was when she went to park in a disable spot and she didn't see someone standing in the shade and nearly squashed him, I nearly had a fit, the man had to jump backwards and all my driving friend said was he shouldn't have been there.:(
 
The car isn't dangerous, just the idiot driving it.
 
The issue with these little smart city cars is they mix it up with dim wads in big cars and you do get this little big thing.
Hopefully as years go on the small city car maybe electric models will pull ahead especially as pollution zones are implemented.

I like the smart car myself but it is a true city micro car.
I believe they come into their own in Japan where you can only own a car above a certain size if you have a place to park it.
 
My wife is on her second Smart car. The first was a City Cabrio with the 599cc turbocharged engine and semi-automated manual 6 speed gearbox. The second is a newer fortwo cabriolet from 2011.
As a city car they're pretty good - nippy, nimble, easy to park, although luggage space is limited. On the open road the gearbox is a bit frustrating, but the newer one is a million times better than the older one.
Its been very reliable and does 50mpg +.

She's been very happy with it, and would like to replace it with a Brabus version.

Occasionally I've driven it on long journeys - 200+ miles and it does an admirable job.

I'm glad it was not just me thinking that, and I was under the impression the Smart was actually considering to be one of the safest cars for the people in them

Kind of - though if I'm not mistaken a 5 star small car is less safe than a 5 star big car.

They are in a front end smash but I don't know about a side on crash.
As for smashing to bits, as all the panels can be quickly unbolted and swapped for panels of a different colour if you wish, plus I believe they are just plastic, I should imagine it would smash to bits.

Well naturally...simple physics has to come in to play at some point :lol:

I should imagine as you say the plastic panels will come off quite easily in a smash

Yes but I mean they make it easier for a small car to get 5 stars. So the kind of injuries that you could get in a 4 star big car might allow a small car to get 5 stars.

I've never felt particularly unsafe in one but they do get a bit exciting when it's windy.

Shirley you forget I know exactly where you live ,:banana: I can't even imagine a smart car getting down your access lane ,let alone going up some of the hills round there .surely someone could make a good living hiring out camels and donkeys ..must visit again one day ,two sugars in my coffee remember :exit::exit:
 
I think the reason the smart car did well on those tests is due partly to it being so light, at any given speed the force of impact of a light car will be less than a heavy one. However, what happens in a pile up when you are between 2 vehicles. You will be safer in a range rover.

It wasn't my car, mine was when I saw you a Subaru. The Smart was smashed into bits, bits. The other car didn't come out of the sky it came round a corner and smashed into the side.

Only because of the SiPs when they pull out of a side tuning right in front of you its like hitting a steel RSJ ;)

funnily enough i drive a volvo S60 ,rather a heavy lump with a 2.5 turbo diesel in it ,but goes like s*** off a shovel when needed

The hardest part of my lane is getting in it from the main road, tons of stone put on the lane has to be brushed up off the pavement so its one hell of a job, first gear and hope to goodness no one is coming out.
Anyway when I did drive a Volvo it had no power steering and my Dad made me a sheep trailor it was so heavy we needed a car like that, one day a car on the other side coming towards us was overtaking and didn't leave enough room to get back in, I tried to pull over on to the verge but impossible with the weight and his car missed me by inches but his trailor hit me, a huge boat slid off the trailor and smashed into the Volvo, there was bits of boat everywhere. I was ok and that is why Dad bought me a 2nd hand Subaru Legacy and then we were talking power, but I had never bought a car before and Dad was partially sighted and I didn't realise it was in kilometers. I never did get booked for speeding, because I didn't speed, £250 per year tax. An hour ago I paid £30 for my Ford Fusion, its a pretty car but not like a Subaru.:)

Having an import that reads in km/h is great, you can just casually drive down the A55 and point out to your passengers that you're doing over 100...

Between two hgv you're screwed either way. As has been seen on the motorways over the years.

Most recently near me on the m3 people died in an audi between 2 lorries. Id not consider Audi to be flimsy cars.

I think you'll find that the trouble is actually younger people who drive too fast.

Anyway, there are Smart Cars and then there are other Smart Cars...

Sadly your right but most of them haven't got high performance cars, all cars can be driven fast its lack of experience on any road and hitting that brake without skidding.

Maybe. But also a light car will get pushed out of the way where a heavy car will crumple to absorb the impact.

But the best option is to avoid getting hit.

ETA: oh you said between 2 vehicles. yeah, that's a bad place to be, whatever you're driving. Try not to do that.
