Any recommendations please for a small led panel. Ideally something that doesn't break the bank

I have a couple of Godox Litemons 6R
You can get them on ebay or amazon and I find them good value for money.
En example fully lit with them

your phone - white screen, max brightness. Should do the job in dark / gloomy conditions

I have 8 GVM 480 LS LED light panels arranged in kind-of a wide leg "U" and attached to a ceiling lighting support grid in my studio that I use for video work around an 8' long banquet table. I know, a much bigger area to be lit than mushrooms, but I set this up about 5 1/2 years ago. These LED light panels produce a relatively soft light since there are 480 separate LED points of light in each so many sources of light within each light panel, and you won't need a soft box,. This model is Bi-Color, so basically amber to white and no color capability. Mine are always set for 5600 K or higher. These are used quite often and have been for about the last 5 years, They each aren't very bright, but one of these light panels, placed within a couple of feet of your mushrooms should work well for you, but you will likely need to raise your ISO some, not anywhere near where you would get noise in your photos, but probably in the range of about 600 ISO. ISO is a light sensitivity setting that tends to make shadows less black, but will also making the whole shots have less contrast. Back in film days, the lowest possible ISO that you could get away with was always the most desired, but with modern digital cameras we can make great benefit using higher ISO settings as long is the requirement is not up near the camera maximum settings, as these can produce noise in the blacker portions of your shots. With these, you are going to need constant light, and the need for something like an LED light panel. The GVM 480 LS panels are available on Amazon here in the USA for about $70 each right now. There are many other brands, sizes, and prices of LED Light Panels available now, but my experience has only been with the GVM panels. They come with barn doors. You won't need soft boxes with them. Any light stand with the spigot top will hold them fine.

But then I need to ask "Why not use flash". With the right settings, you will get great shots of your mushrooms with a speedlite or two and a pair of small (like 12") soft boxes along with the right settings of your camera, unless you are trying to do this with a very basic camera or cell phone. Then, flash wont' work and you will get better results with soft constant light sources like LED light panels.

Sunlight and reflectors outdoors that can be DIY made from foam core, and maybe some light dispersion material will work well too, although the shot that you posted looks fine to me.

I hope this will help you make the needed decision. You shouldn't need to spend much to get the shots that you are looking for.

Charley
