What do you think of when someone says a small aperture..?

This is always something i get confused about, is it referring to the number or the actual size on the blades..?

I usually think of it as the number but i am curious to see what others refer to it as.

Small aperture relates to the physical size, the larger the number the smaller the size.

f/1.4 wide open

f/22 really really small :D

Another way of thinking of it is in terms of what, for example, f4 means.

As the other posts note it should be written f/4, ie f divided by 4

f is the focal length of the lens. So if you set a lens at f/4 the diameter of the aperture is the focal length divided by 4.

For a 100mm lens set at f/4 the aperture diameter = 25mm, but at f/11 = 9mm(approx), so small f number means big aperture and vice versa.

I think of aperture as simply an opening or size of hole if you prefer. The word Aperture isn't exclusive to photography yet it effectively means the same thing wherever it is used i.e.

Small aperture small opening and vice versa

In the beginning I learned on here to think of the f number as a fraction - then you can sort of visualise the aperture;

For example, f4=1/4 or f16=1/16 - you know that one quarter 1/4 is a larger number than one sixteenth 1/16 therefore f4 will be a larger aperture than f16.

I will remember it like that now, cheers :thumbs:
