Hi gals/guys, I am new here and film!!! Just obtained an old slr, pentax me super, it looks great and can't wait to start. i put a new battery in and the light in the viewfinder is on, the shutter sounds fine, the film advance lever works good but then i found out the film spool doesn't wind film properly.

when i insert the film, then press the shutter and advance the film, the film spool doesn't wind it, instead the film just comes out on the side.

is there any way i can fix it? i don't want to spend much as i have just started. sorry for the poor description.

if i need a new one, may you suggest me a 35mm slr? i like the manual one. thanks

Hi Annie,
Welcome to Talk Photography, and Film & Conventional. The ME Super is a very popular SLR and I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

Sounds like you are pretty much there - I suggest taking a quick look at the manual, available here - and follow their loading procedure to the letter, and seeing if you still have problems.

Could you describe better what you mean by "the film just comes out on the side"? A picture would be even better although obviously only if you have access to a digital camera/phone camera.

thank you so much for your reply!!

i followed the instruction and think (hope;)) i was right on the procedures. the film comes out on the side which it doesn't wind into the film spool. basically the film spool doesn't move to wrap the film on it. does it make any sense?

Haha with film photography it often is hope! :D

So basically, you place the canister (writing upside down) in the chamber on the left, place the prong/opening back lever down, pull the film from the left to the right, feed it into one of the white spindle things on the right hand side, and then as you advance the film lever the film should wrap clockwise around it?

I had some issues with one SLR with this, and found I was feeding it in thinking it would wind counter-clockwise.

It's just a case of starting off being willing to waste an extra shot or two until you are 100% certain it's feeding properly and spooling correctly. Once you are comfortable with it you'll find you can get away with exposing far less film before closing the back.

The key thing is to check that the film rewind handle rotates each time you work the lever, that way you know you are doing it right.

hi Annie, Welcome to the F&C section of TP. i don't know where you're based but if you have a Poundland shop anywhere near you it's worth buying a rollmof their Kodak filmand use it to rest your camera. Load the film but leave the back open that way you can see what's going on and if anything isn't doing what it should.

Best of luck

OK lets recap:

Pull out the leader, and insert it into one of the slots in the spool, push it a good way in.

Fire shutter and start advancing the lever..

watch as the film is pulled along, make sure the sprocket holes align with the teeth on the sprockets...

and voila, end of travel. Shut the film door and take some pictures.

(Note the leader shouldn't really poke all the way out of the other side of the spool as above but it won't really do any harm if it does!)

it was what i have done which load the film but leave the back open, the film doesn't wrap clockwise around spindle.

hang on.......the film spool on my camera doesn't have a slot to insert:thinking:

They don't look like slots no, but push the film into the spool between the ridges and you'll feel it go in with a bit of resistance. It takes getting used to, it's a kinda weird system (not as bad as Minolta's though!)

i am quite sure that i understand or not(sorry for being daft), according on your last pic, there is a little slot on the spool but mine is just a while spool and no where to put the film go in.

would it be possible someone has modified it? i got it in ebay.

thanks all again. i tried but the film doesn't wrap on the spool.....

i may try to take a photo of it and show you guys later then.

:lol: sorted!!! it definitely is an idiot prove!!!

thanks all!!
