Hi All

I'm going to New Zealand in September and I am planning on taking some amazing photos of the beautiful mountains, lakes etc. :D

Due to the trip i am looking to buy my first SLR to ensure some extra amazing photos! My budget is upto approx £450.

I currently have a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 which takes some alright photos buy I want a camera that I can use as a newy to SLR's and that can capture the beauty of New Zealand!

So any recommendations of which camera and where is cheapest to buy would be great!

Thanks

Since your a complete noob, i'll give you a few things to think about.

First off, with your budget - don't even consider brand new. Go Second Hand.

Lenses are the most expensive part of photography. Get a body which is decent and then as you can afford to, upgrade the lenses until you have a good set.

Only upgrade the body when you have the lenses you feel you need at the time and can afford to upgrade.

So to keep in budget you could go for a body which is about £200 ish second hand.
Lenses - then allow maybe £160 for that to get something to start with.

Don't forget about everything else, memory cards, batteries, chargers, backpacks/bags, filters will easily allow you to hit that £450 budget.

Some advice for a noob from a 3 week experienced noob. Just a few things for you to think about. The more experienced photographers on the forums will give you much better suggestions - but hey since no-one posted i thought why not!

And get it soon as September isn't all that far away for you to get in lots of practise before you go!

Don't know much about new Zealand or how the money is over there. But might be cheaper to go to a second hand shop over there if you have time.

I'd like to add something to what Adam (inlineadam) said. If you get the chance, get down to a store and try the different cameras out. The feel of the thing is important. Even if you do end up buying second hand, the ergonomics of the camera should be rather similar to those new ones in the store.
Have a great time in New Zealand! I would (almost) kill to go there!

Nope, cameras and electronics are a lot dearer over there.

I was in NZ a few months back, I just took my G1 and 14-45, the place is so cool you don't need a bag of tat to take a good photo over there.
:)

Agreed. Camera and Camera is an NZ camera shop and a 100-400 will set you back the equivalent of about £1600.

I also agree with Scots quine about getting practice in.

Been for a look at cameras and to get a feel for them and I am looking to get the Canon 500D with the 18-55 and 75-300 lens or the Canon 550D with the 18-55.

Would you say that these would be a decent camera and good enough lenses for a beginner and New Zealand?

Cheers

Paul
