Yes
Ive had talktalk broadband for just over a week now and iam still getting a poor speed I was under the impression that the speed should increase after a week or two but ive not seen any increase as of yet.

Iam not expecting amazing results as I believe iam quite far from the exchange. Iam using the standard EchoLife HG521 with a wired connection to my PC. The only thing Ive not done yet is buy an additional ADSL filter for my third phone socket, but I doubt that would make much difference anyway.

Below are what I believe are my line stats, could someone give me any more info on how if I can improve my speed?

I had a nightmare with TalkTalk having been a happy Tiscali customer for about 5 years. Never again.

I think providers usually quote 10 days for stabilisation but when I switched to BT the line speed never gave me anything decent until they did a load of tests and maintenance work. Perhaps this was linked to the problem I had with TalkTalk - but their handling of the problem was unacceptable.

I'm not an expert by any means at all but your upload speed looks ok, your download speed sucks though.

That's really quite terrible. Report it, get them to try and fix it. It may be something they can fix. The more you do this gives you more ammo for discounts, etc.

Know this process all too well.

That's not stunningly good, but it depends on your distance from the exchange, as you mentioned.

Pump your phone number and postcode into here:
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

and then click on 'Locality'.

At the bottom it will give you a straight line distance to your exchange. Take a note of it and then let us know what it is.

I'm guessing that it has to be over five miles with those stats, although the upload speed belies that slightly.

Have you got your router plugged in to the BT master socket, ie the one that is at the first point of entry into the house?

I cant seem to get the distance from the exchange probably because my flat is a new build.

Yup the router is plugged into my main BT socket.

Thanks for all the advice :)

speed will also vary on the quality of cabling, if you are in the middle of nowhere the old copper cables can be pretty roapy. trees leaning on cables is also a good one for increasing connection woahs, as is water ingress to the green boxes at the end of your road. do you get any hiss or crackle on your telephone line?

can you see signal/noise ratio and attenuation in your router settings? if so what does it say?

also, move you router away from items such as: fridges, microwaves, power transformers to name a few..

Yup the router is plugged into my main BT socket.

I was told by PlusNet to leave the PC connected for 72hours non-stop
at first set-up

you can surf/email - just dont turn the PC off and drop the connection

were with tiscalli - now talk talk, and i have to say there was a noticable speed drop now making Xbox live unuseable complaining did nothing, they just said its because were so far from the exchange, however BT customers on the estate are normally over 1mbs so who knows whats going on :(

Tiscali (now part of TT) are one of the worst ISP to upgrade their infrastructure to higher speed. I was on Tiscali for more than 4 years (only because they were cheaper on unlimited package) and my line only 2.3miles from exchange, I stayed on 1 MBPS theoratical speed all the time. World moved on to 20mbps that time, but I was living in a major city with this kind of broadband speeds.

Create a thread and ask the techs to look at your stats and change your profile, it worked wonders for me and they respond fairly swiftly.

Firstly the main thing to remember is to NEVER actually call talk talk!!!!! they are useless to deal with.

Sign up with TalkTalkmembers forum, their second line staff use it. You can raise a fault with them and they will actually help you within a day or two. If your line is stable though you can ask for your snr profile to be reduced, they can knock it down to 8 or 6 (yours currently 12profile) that will increase your speed. other than that I take it as its a new flat TalkTalk are the first provider you have been with? or were you getting higher speeds with anyone else?

We binned talktalk once our contract ended. Their internet was shocking (horrendous connection speeds, constant disconnects, no online gaming, certain downloads blocked, couldnt access certain websites etc), numerous phone calls didnt help either. As soon as we swithced to BT we went from **** speeds like the above to 8mb DL almost instantaneously.

Thanks alot will do that tonight once I get in from work.

Well my dad has talktalk and his service is great nice and quick too.

Hmmmm, ok a couple of things here.
I assume you are looking for potential problems as to why its not very good? As opposed to just starting a Talk Talk bashing thread.

If so...ADSL Mode is ADSL2, it should be ADSL2 PLUS.
Your Line Atten and SN figures seem a lot out also.

I see Bhoy_Whunder (sounds like a Selik fan to me ) had loads of problems. I to had a few but never Online Gaming or Blocking downloads or Shaping or Coning the Connection.
Get them out to look at it.

Just to buck the trend here, I'm with talktalk and I've found their service to be top notch.....I live in semi-rural Norwich, and have had 10.0Mb/s download speeds, which is around 3-4Mb/s faster than I got with Sky, who were shockingly unreliable!! :gag:

We have just changed to BT Infinity (fibreoptics) and have noticed a vast improvement.

We had very slow speeds before.

Is that thru a standard phone line?

Iam still having trouble with my connection. Ive asked on the talktalk forums a number of times but the response time is really slow. Can anyone help me out?

It's "fibre to cabinet" I think, so it uses the phone line but only as far as the green box in the street. From there it is mux-ed onto a fibre-optic cable. The benefit being instead of having a twisted copper pair run all the way back the exchange / remote collector it only goes a short way to the box, hence the much higher speeds, line length is really important.

I moved house recently and the exchange where I used to live is getting BT Infinity by the end of the year. Bah!

Aye right!

If you are Tiscali, you can't join the above forum, despite paying TalkTalk!

With Pipex for 5 years with no problems then taken over by Talk Talk, speed droped off like a stone. Get out if you can. Good look. Item on Watchdog last night as well about problems finishing with them.:bonk:

Well removed the front plate on the master socket and plugged the router in there, speed has increased somewhat stil nothing great mind

Spoke to talktalk and they are getting there network team to look into it and get back to me.

Talk Talk are currently going through a drastic change. The forums have been reduced down to 5 which was done without notice to anybody including the moderators.
They featured on Watchdog last week and it appears that ofcom have taken an interest in some billing anomalies.

This was after I bought a new router. The one supplied by Talktalk was pants.
I was lucky to be getting half of the above.

What router did you get?

I am with AOL which is the same company as Talk Talk so I am told. My service has been getting worse over the last few months. I phoned them up and asked what they could do about the appalling speed. They did a line test and told me that the upload and download speed is the best it can be with BT's infrastructure, ie copper phone lines.

Mick.

What router did you get?
Belkin 'N' class wireless, from Curry's. I'm wired to my desktop PC but wireless to my netbook: this also showed a huge speed gain.
The Talktalk had only one RJ45, Belkin has a more sensible 4.
My son's laptop (Vista) went through the one-off set-up no probs. I'm using Linux so the set-up disk was redundant for me but after that, I put in the passwords etc manually and away it went!
As an aside, Talktalk 'support' wouldn't even discuss anything cos I was using Linux, even though the interface to their router is accessed via any browser!!?? :-(
