Yes
Hi all. I've been reading a bit about slow sync flash recently but couldn't find the setting on my Canon 1000d. Am I being silly as the manual.definately mentions it. Or am I just meant to use front curtain/1st curtain with a slow shutter speed. Can anyone help? Markyboy

I think you've got it already. Just use a long exposure time. The camera should expose the scene and use the flash to fill in the subject.

I prefer to use rear/2nd curtain sync for long exposures with flash, as the ghosting will lead your eye to the subject when lit, rather than away from it with 1st curtain.

Are there any occasions where 1st curtain is preferred? (I wondered why it is always default!)

Great thanks all for the help. I know that NIKON has a seperate setting for slow sync but I guess with Canon I will have to do it manually. Thanks again

In the custom functions there will be an option to lock the shutter speed at max sync speed with flash. (or maybe also an option that lets it go between 1/60 and max sync)

If you turn this off (on my 40D it's 1/250 fixed or "auto", so auto is slow sync. might be the same on your 1000D), it'll be in slow sync mode.
Canons default to slow sync in Av mode.

I tend to leave mine on 2nd curtain sync all the time, as 2nd sync only come in to operation at 1/50 or below, above that speed it default back to 1st sync no mater what.

Av mode will give you automatic slow-sync with flash.

Second curtain sync only makes a difference if the subject is moving, but be aware that when using E-TTL it tends to make the subject blink in reaction to the pre-flash, or even move away thinking that the picture has been taken if the shutter speed is longer. With long speeds, timing the shot is more difficult with second curtain. Basically, first curtain is better unless there is movement, and even then, not always.

With Canons, second curtain sync only works at 1/25sec and longer speeds.

Actually in my 1D Mark IV manual it says 1/50 on page 123

That's interesting, thanks Mark. Most books say "longer than 1/30sec" or something similar, suggesting it is inherant to the Canon system. On my 5D2 I've confirmed that as 1/25sec when it kicks in.

1D4 is a bit special in the flash department but I didn't know that. With Pocket Wizards you can crank it up to 1/100sec or perhaps a bit less I think.

Thanks for the correction :)

Spot on squishy thanks for that its on auto as default as you said so its been on slow sync the whole time or for me 1/200 fixed. So does that mean that on auto it will aitomatically takw the slowest possible shutter speed for correct exposure?

On Av, yes.
