Slow Shutter speed

Ive just got a canon 350d and no matter what I do I cant get a decent shutter speed unless im on the auto setting?
The fastest I can get on P is 0''4?
Ive looked on the manual and thats no help? I have no clue what im doing, but It wont let me adjust the shutter speed any faster using the twirly dial thing :/
 
You need light, what is the light like? You could wack up the ISO. You'll get some noise maybe. Also what aperture are you using. Using a larger apperture (smallest f number) will let more light in

Post an image so we can see what settings your camera is using. Have you tried during the day when the light is brighter?
 
Put your camera into ay and play with the F numbers, lower the number the more light is let in so you should get a higher shutter speed.
If you are in a room that is dark with just the lights on you willl not get a fast shutter speed.
Keep trying different settings till you get a faster shuttter speed.

If you want to set the shutter speed as priority then set to AV. Using the P setting means the camera is using the settings it thinks most appropriate for the ISO setting you have set.

If you want to set both the shutter and aperture the turn to M :D
 
Even using Av with a slow lens and even if you use a high ISO - in normal room lighting you will still get a pretty slow SS.....

You mean Tv?

We really need some shots to see what setting you are using.

I got my 1st DSLR in March and, trust me, my first shots were bad, I mean, very bad. I couldn't get a decent shot for toffee until I realised my setting were all wrong.

Then I just experimented with the "twirly dial thing" and here presto I got some decent shots.
