Slow Shutter Speed Waterfall Techniques

Give it a go. Think I've done some with similar filters.

Once watched a video where all they did was take about a dozen photographs with no filters and blended them on PS. Might have been Scott Kelby or one if his crew.

One thing, I prefer, some detail in the water. I'm not so keen when the water is white.

Cheers and post some.

Hi, Really depends on the look you want to achieve, personally I don't go with the 10 stop filters but tend to find that 0.6 or 0.9 ND filter does a good job.
Go to youtube and just type in long exposure photography and you will find loads of content.
Long exposure photography does take time and practice.
Go out with your ND filters and see if they give you what you are looking for because at the end of the day it is what YOU think is a good photograph!!!

I was advised to experiment by selecting manual mode and then slowing the shutter speed down and using an aperture which would normally underexpose the photo. Take one and then see what the playback shows. Too bright adjust aperture accordingly, too dark try a longer exposure. A tripod is pretty much essential to avoid camera shake.

The other option will be higher number ND filters (can you stack the 2 and the 4?).

I share posiview's opinion to some extent. In my opinion if you are shooting fountains I like to freeze the water getting detail, with gentle waterfalls a more milky effect is better.

At Niagara Falls we strongly preferred having detail in the shot - it seemed to show the power of the waterfall more.

How blurry do you want the water to be? There are a few examples in my gallery (test and technical) of a few different shutter speeds. I had limited control over shutter speed and aperture and only a pol as a light reducer.

depends on speed of water, light and proximity to subject. take a few test shots f11, f16 f22 etc without nd see if its effect you want without filter. If its not try with filter. Best advice practice and take a cloth or 2. Cover nd between shots
