I have a Canon 7d and 70 - 200 f4 L usm. I have purchased a sling strap for comfort. Would you recommend attaching the sling strap to the camera's tripod screw or investing in a tripod ring mount for the lens, and attaching to that?
The canon lens tripod mounts seem rather pricey.

70-200 f4l should be fine with the strap attached to the camera. The only reason you might want to add a tripod mount on the lens and use that is to change the balance. I'd use it as is and see how you get on, if you go for a tripod collar on the lens go third party canons are a disgusting rip off!

The thing about the tripod mounts is they're supplied with most lenses that might need them. And are available for a few lenses that don't really 'need' them.

It's a personal choice but I'd say that lens will happily hang off a camera.

i have a sling strap on my siggy 150-500 and mount it to the lens as it sits better at my side when walking. also easier to grab at that angle, hth mike. with regards weight if the lens is as heavy /or heavier than your camera then mount to the lens :)

there are cheap copies of the lens foot adapter thingy, i got one might fit, but it has a window machined in it :x

I definitely prefer 70-200 Nikon hung off tripod collar - not camera.
Point to note on mine though is the lens AF & VR switches can be moved when walking if lens rubs on hip. Adjust/turn collar position to avoid this.
Also - don't trust the carabina. My safety lock unscrewed allowing camera and lens to drop! Make sure you tighten or use locktite 243 e.g.

Thanks for all replies.
I do have a concern regarding the 3rd party rings, can I trust them with camera & lens £1800+. If there was a flaw in the build, could easily snap and crash to the ground
