When I turned 30 last year, I started to think about my health.....or lack of it! Grossly overweight, 20 a day smoker for 16 years, and absolutely no exercise for a LONG time.....something had to change!!

So after thinking about it for a while, I put my plan in to action, and a little over 11 weeks ago, I stopped smoking.....which tbh I found a lot easier than I thought I would! Huge health benefits, and I've already saved enough cash to pay for the flights for our family holiday in June....I honestly can't recommend quiting enough to any smokers reading this, just DO IT!!

Then, two weeks ago, my diet kicked off! This was a huge shock to my system.....you see, I've ALWAYS eaten whatever I wanted without a second thought.....and all of it bad for me!! :shake: Some people might not get their head around this, but at 30 years old, I had never, not once in my life, had I eaten a salad (or even a small part of one)!! I'm a genuine salad dodger....quite sad, really!

I hadn't been able to weigh myself at home for quite a long time as the bathroom scales I had only went up to 22st 10lb, and if I stood on them, I'd get the dreaded "ERR[OR]" message on the display.....yeah, I'm a big lad! So off I went to buy some scales that would actually tell me how much I weighed (these ones go up to over 31st!). Me and my wife both had guesses as to what I'd weigh, my guess was 24st, my wife guessed 23st 7lb....so I got on the scales and the number staring back at me? A "paltry" 23st 2lb!! :shake:

So the diet started. Nothing fancy or trendy, just lower fat intake and watching the calories.....taking time to think about what I'm eating and more importantly why I'm eating it.....I keep telling myself, there's no point eating if I'm not hungry! :nono:

Anyway, after a pretty tough first week (during which I ate my first ever salad!), I returned to the dreaded "scales of doom" and closed my eyes while my wife told me how much I'd lost/gained :p A really pleasing 6lbs  which mean't I then weighed 22st 10lb.....a pretty solid start I though! :)

Earlier today was my second weigh in, and since I've had a couple of guessing games on facebook, I thought I'd have a bit of fun on here by asking you lot if you fancy a huess too?!

So, only rules are, one guess each and no changing your guess! My regular weigh in day is Tuesday, and I'll keep it as up to date as I can. Please, as much banter as you like along the way.....this is all a bit of fun!!

Week 0: 23st 2lbs
Week 1: 22st 10lbs (6lb loss)
Week 2: 22st 2lbs (8lb loss)
Week 3: 22st 2lbs (same)
Week 4: 21st 8lbs (8lb loss)
Week 5: 21st 3lbs (5lb loss)
Week 6: 21st 0lbs (3lb loss)
Week 7: 20st 12lbs (2lb loss)
Week 8: 20st 8lbs (4lb loss)
Week 9: 20st 5lbs (3lb loss)
Week 10: 20st 2lbs (3lb loss)
Week 11: 20st 5lb (3lb gain)

Week 13: 20st (2lb loss)

No plans for regular pics, although I'll stick one up once in a while to show the progress (if I make any!).....no exercise yet, I need to lose a bit of weight first, moving ~23st on a treadmill is a big task :help: However the exercise will start in a couple of months time. No specific diet as such, just watching my fat and calorie intake, avoiding the dreaded take-aways and fried foods.....no crash dieting, just being sensible!!

Well done you for now deciding to improve your general health.
Amazing the amount of money saved from quitting smoking.
If you want to loose weight around your waist come and help me dig over my allotment...its a definite win win.
All the best
Dave

Best bit is, I'm still alive to tell the tale!! :p

Well done for quitting smoking first of all and double congratulations on starting the diet. I'll guess 22st6lb for this week as weight loss drops after the first couple of weeks but its all fat you are losing now.Keep at it and dont be put off by small slip ups. That sounds a very sensible diet. The fad ones dont really work in the long term.:thumbs::thumbs:.

I'll make my guess at 22st 3lbs

Thanks Dave, I'd offer to help, but I think I'll have a headache or something like that for the next few days so sadly I can't....:p...good luck with it though!! :D

I agree Sue, the fad diets just don't make sense to me.....burn more calories than you put in, and you'll lose weight.....simple!! Won't be phased by slip-ups, me and my wife had a curry last wednesday, but had boiled rice instead of chips and skipped the starters, breads etc....probably saved myself about a thousand calories on what I'd normally have!!

Thanks for everyones guesses so far....I'll be "revealing" this weeks weigh in a bit later tonight!!

I'll go 22 4 too - but whatever it is I reckon you'll be able to get back on the old scales now.

Well done so far - and don't deprive yourself too much or you won't stick with it. The occasional take-away like last night isn't a bad thing . . . as long as it's only occasional

Moderation is the key, as you've seemed to realise. Make sure you're getting a good balance of proteins, carbs, vitamins etc. and as you've said, as long as you burn more calories than you consume the weight will come off. Food diaries are a great way to moderate what you eat and allow you to have the occasional curry to prevent a more permanent slip without any detriment to the overall weight loss. Increasing your water intake is recommended by many, especially if you've had a high salt diet in the past.
Don't start running for a while yet, 22stone is a lot of strain on the knees, but increase the amount of walking you do in your everyday life. Changes like taking the stairs instead of an escalator/lift all helps.

I'm going to have a guess at 22 - 7.

Oh, and good luck!

I'm going to guess 21-13lbs. Once the diet kicks in, it soon comes of quickly. I lost
2st 2lbs in 2 months a couple of years ago. I was so pleased!
Unfortunately it all crept back on other the next year. So, I'm trying again..

Kev.

I'll go for 22st 6lb, I've started my own this year but I only need to get from 17st down to 14 ish:D The wife's in charge of the diet which is good, my job is quite physical plus 1hr ish a day on the torture machines.

22stone 5 &1/2lbs. Well done on the smoking if you put by what you would have spent on fags each week it will soon mount up. New kit!!! - holidays and all sorts.
Keep up the good work on both.

a medium sized Rhino, 3 sheep and 2 chickens.

22st 6.5lbs, Well done with both the healthy eating plan (I don't want to use the word diet) & quitting smoking, you are doing fantastically well!!! I know you are past the hard bit of quitting smoking but can I offer more encouragement via this fab piece of software,
http://www.dedicateddesigns.com/qk/
Its called quit keeper & it encouraged me & made sure I continued as a non smoker 3.5 years ago when I was forced into quitting. It was & still is one of the best things I have I ever done in my life.

Wow, good luck with this, usually I've found that people put on weight when stopping smoking, you've gone for the double whammy, still the money you save will buy new clothes.

Huge thanks for all your comments, really helpful to have some encouragement.....except for Lynton, obviously!!

Anyway, time to reveal this weeks weight.....I lost another 8lbs, making my new weight, 22st 2lbs!! :D

I believe the only person to get it right is Doddy1974....well done Cathy!!

Thanks again everyone, I really do appreciate it!! Here's hoping for another good week, although with a trip to Leeds at the weekend  I might not have another 8lb loss....guess we'll find out next week!

Well done mate!
Early guess for next week: 21st 11lb - and you WILL get there ... or else ... :D

Take pictures - even if the're just for yourself. I did mine every month - front, back, left, right and close up face. It's really interesting watching the differences over the months. Plus it also acts as a reminder of where you don't want to go again.

Good on you for making it work.

If you want some excercise, get in the pool, even walking widths in the water is good, and the extra support from the water will mean you don't have the impact on your joints.

might want to ditch the white bread mate, will get the job done much quicker, im from the other side of the camp, im 6ft2 ish and ive only just got to 10st...

get yourself swimming like others say, its non impact exercise so you wont get the joint pain the days after and should help you get a bit of tine under the winter layers ;)

Well done on the weight loss Damien.

What i would say, is be careful, losing 8lbs isn't 'sustainable', nor should you want it to be.

Remember, you want to be going for 'fat loss', not just 'weight loss'. Weight loss = glycogen, water, lean muscle tissue, etc... Fat loss doesnt need explaining.

Good luck with your dieting and exercise, if you would like any advice, just ask.

Your enthusiasm is excellent, i am just trying to maybe offer some advice to help you out along the way.

Again, geuine thanks for the comments and advice folks.....all really really helpful!

I know the big losses will slow down soon, I'm not under any illusions that I'll keep on losing half a stone every week.....I'd get very worried if I did!! ;) I am, however, enjoying the good start I've made! :D

Thanks again folks!!!

Might as well have a guess myself for next week.....I'm going for 21st 13lbs (3lb loss), with a calorie heavy trip to Leeds ahead this weekend, I don't there will be any big losses next Tuesday! :shake:

Back on it 100% the week after though!!!

Just to keep this up to date, I stayed the same this week.....100% due to my trip up north at the weekend, which (unsuprisingly) saw me eat like a hungry hippohad I not done so well the rest of the week then I'd definitely have put some back on!!

Back on it now though and I'm guessing a 7lb loss over the next week, weighing me in at 21st 9lb.....so fingers crossed!!!

Slim - you related to Hacker? Avatar shot v similar!

therefore my guess will be

3 sheep,
7 chickens.
2 quail.

Err M8 can you make sure you don't stand on one leg whilst on the weighing scales!!! Does tend to affect the results!!!

Seriously well done so far.
