Lets say you just shell out for a new 40d and EF-S 17-55 IS USM lens.

To test the camera you take a few shots in the living room (under normal house lights). You take various pics in Auto, P, Tv and Av. At different shutter speeds and apertures.

Auto focus is enabled on the lens - as is IS.

Yet every single photo is not focussed correctly under any of these conditions.

When taking the photo the AF Points appear to focus on my subject yet the photo shows the subject OOF.

Any obvious reasons why this might be happening. I just hope it's user error and not a faulty something? :bonk:
 
first thing I'd look at is shutter speed
even with IS it can be too slow

also try a focussing test chart
 
Shutter blur due to relatively low shutter speed,

some image examples would help?
 
This was in Tv mode @ 17mm - f/2.8 ISO 800 1/25

at F 2.8 you are going to have such a narrow DOF, and at 1/25 sec shutter blur is a possibility.

Have you tried placing it on a firm surface (if you haven't a tripod), use the self timer, and set the lens at f8

And compare resultsa?
 
Here is the same photo using a Tripod @ f/8.0 1/4 sec

Looks better but the focus point is the tree and it is still out of focus. The original size image shows this better than the re-size.

How did you fire the tripod shot? Release cable? Timer?

I'd try it one more time at ISO100, f/8, +1 EC (that should the shutter time about 4 secs) and use timer release if you don't have a cable. Move in a bit close and focus using centre point only on the writing on the cards and then post a 100% crop so we can see if it's sharp.

Also try a shot outside at around f/8 handheld with and without IS turned on, you should get a good shutter speed then.

One final thing, are you shooting jpg? The 40D default sharpness in jpg mode is actually quite soft and can stand going up a notch or two.
 
Autofocus will find it hard to focus on the tree i would think...and if you use manual it will be just as hard as the tree is dark.

As previously said i would definitely get outside in some light and perhaps have some objects in line towards you and focus on one spot and see what happens then. Use the centre spot of your autofocus only.
 
Janice - you figured out the problem. It was the AF Points were set on auto - once i set only one center AF point now everything is coming out sharp as a nut. Thank a lot. I was starting to panic that i had a dud camera / lens. Just user error :lol: :bonk:
 
Glad to hear it! You will prob be able to use all autofocus points in another situation... but dark fur and stuff like that is notorious for making autofocus not work.. and that tree was one of those situations.
The lines of the picture on the wall looked perfect so Im sure you have nothing to worry about.
