I'm afraid that I've been a bit of a mong and need some help.

Yesterday I left my EOS-3 set to CFn 2-1 which basically leaves the film tail out on rewind and my 'filing system' went to pot during the course of things.

I've compared the four cassettes that I took (1 used, 3 blank) and can't see any obvious differences in length of tail or creasing.

Any suggestions as to how to tell which one was used or do I just chuck them all in for processing and put it down to lessons learned? :bang::bang::bang:

Only the plus side, develop only will only be £2.50, but it's still a monumental pain!

Well - as a regular user of a eos-3, I have to say, It never seems to make a mark on the film leader, so I'd have problems distinguishing them - and would therefore be chucking them all in for D&P.

If it's any consolation, I've had the problem myself, shot one film twice and processed one blank film, and one of double exposures. Since then, as I take the film out of the camera I fold a 1/4 inch section of the leader over and put a indelible crease in it before doing anything else. It's worked for about 30 rolls since the original debacle.

Process them one at a time and you might get lucky and not develop the used one last! ;)

Thanks Mark, I rather thought that would be the case. I can't see any trace of use on the film at all.

Fortunately it's all Kodak Ultramax 400 Poundland special, so I won't be horrendously out of pocket, but it's still a pain.

I'll be using numbered canisters from now on, and have reset the CFn to 0 in the mean time!

I must put in an addition to the My New Toy thread as well! :D

I have made the mistake of double exposing as well so although I do not own a Canon, every time I finish a film with my Olympus I tear off about a 1/4 of the leader.

Are you developing them yourself or sending them in? I've done that before and the lab didn't charge me for the blank ones.

I had thought of that, but the pics are from yesterday's demo, so I want to push them through this afternoon. I'm going to appeal to the honestly of my local camera shop, keep my fingers crossed and ask them to keep an eye on the results as they come out!

The "leader out" custom function is great for those of us who process our own film, but if I was using a lab, then it'd be "leader in" all the way.

My method of creasing the end of the film leader is just born of my laziness and lack of organization - it doesn't need any pre-preparing, doesn't rely on me carrying a marker pen for labeling the canister and plastic tub, and it can't wear off - it's part of the film, whatever I do. Plus - I'm processing the film, and first thing I do is snip off the tapered bit of the leader anyway, before loading it into the spiral - the snipped bit goes into a drop of the fix to decide how depleted the fix has got, so I don't even waste that

A half decent shop will put them through one at a time, and if the first three come out with images on, hold the fourth one for you, I'd have thought

Doh!!!!

I've just bought an EOS-3, even with the obvious mistake you can still be smug that you have bought a cracking camera :)

EDIT: on a more helpful note you could snip off and Dev the first 6" of the films, the un exposed ones will have a small amount of exposed leader tab, the one you have run through the camera will have about 4-5" of exposed film, then an unexposed section before the pics start (there is another inch or so before the first frame).

I wish I had had that option on my F80. I turned up to the studio with my F80 and 400 ISO film. It was a Lencarta session so didn't have the option of too much messing about to find the right settings each time so just had to rewind the film (it had only taken 4 images). I then installed some Neopan 100 and away I went. Now I have to get the leader back out and shoot 5 pics with the lens cap on to get back to where I was :) I don't have a leader retrieval tool so will have to try the plastic tape method I think......

EDIT: Bought one now :) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pro-Film-Retr...Supplies_SM&hash=item5885320f91#ht_2787wt_885

Result!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy at the shop noticed that one of the leaders was about three mm further extended than the others and hit the correct one first time!

Lesson learned, pics in the Film Forum later today! :)
