On a couple of pics I have got a slight dark line around a bird thats flying where its against the sky. Even though its slight is there a way to stop it happening or is it get riddable of in post processing?

Susie, it's a bit difficult to say without having a look - Expect you'll be able to "fix" it with some post processing though.
Any chance you could post an example?

Cheers
Dave

Picture that shows it best is this one, lets hope it still shows now its saved for web!

Someone else here may have a better idea, but it looks to me like it's been over sharpened.

I can see what you mean though, the owl looks almost as though it's been cut and pasted onto the sky.

From the look of your website Susie I would have thought you would be asking people here how to make the dark lines stand out more! :)

looks like its has been oversharpened, is this the original? if you have the option to disble in camera sharpening do so.

:bang: Duh, the camera had just come back from being sorted out when I took this and I'm pretty sure it was shot in jpeg which it was set on when I opened the box, so it most likely will be that as I would have just sharpened at the normal settings that I uae on RAW files - think I get stupid of the year award for that one!

Well I have got some nice ones ready to go on there, shame I deleted so many when I started

You shouldnt put yourself down Susie. Potentially that is a really impressive pic

An un-sharpened one could be handy, I'm not sure if it isn't CA as much as anything.
I can't really see the dark line, there's a light line running down the bottom side of the wing on the right, under its body and a bit on the top side of the left wing that's giving that cut/paste look.
That's probably sharpening, is this the area you're talking about ?

Thank you very much, I have got one better one that I want to try processing, so perhaps I am improving slightly a little bit :)

Thanks, If you look at the wing on the left of the pic, underneath it (on the brown bit) there is a blueish line or shadow between the wing and sky.
Unedited 100% crop of the top of the wing on the left of the picture, probably shows it better?

I thought thats what you were getting at, with you're dark lines, but you never know.
Yeah, looks like chromatic aberration (CA), not the result of over sharpening.

 Thanks very much :D

At least this tme its not me, all I need to do now is get a program to remove it as Elements 6 does not seem to which shoiuld be fairly easy

It actually looks worse on the fullsize than the 100% crop, purpley blue fringing, but its not that bad really, I've seen a lot worse.
Its always the same, the longer we spend looking at something the more faults we can find.....:(

LightRoom has facilities to remove chromatic abberration

Hmm, I've just downloaded the 30 day one and found the slider thingies for that, but its not doing anything that I can see, I'll have to give it a go tomorrow when I've not been looking at a screen all day!
Processing and me just don't mix!!

Thanks for the pointer though :)

 I am being really stupid, or is it nothing more complicated than motion blur? It gets progressively worse along the wing toward the outer most wing ends. The wings have more movement the further along them you go, so add that tiny bit of progessive motion blur against the blue sky, and what you get is that line imo. I could be totally wrong, but if it was my picture, that would be my assumption.

Looks like motion blur to me. Could attempt a fix in photoshop but may be a bit tricky

Anything tricky will be way out of my ability level, so if its not me doing something totally wrong (other than needing a faster shutter) I will put it down to experience and just ignore, at least it's identified and I can avoid it in the future, so thanks everyone

If it is chromatic aberration Susie - a faster shutter won't help. It's caused by the lens and you get it where there is a high contrast, like you have between the birds wing and the sky.

The only way to avoid it is with more expensive lenses but even then it's still a problem in some cases. So your solution is either spending out on new lenses or playing with Photoshop :-)

Hey Matty you don't know how shakey her hands are :-)

  hopefully my hands are not that shakey!!! plus for a change I was not using it handheld, I'll blame the lens for this one and just have to slap it if it does it again!!
