What size slides, 35mm ?
What quality do you need, just for screen display or enlarged prints ?
How much editing do you plan on doing to them ?
Do you have plenty of time to scan 1000 slides ?
What is your budget ?

I've just bought an epson v700. I am yt to try a slide scan but will update you once I have. For negatives though it is brilliant.

The newer scanners are quicker, but a deticated film scanner will set you back alot! the scanner that we in college has a 4.5 dynamic range but is about two and a half grand!! You will get a flatbed scanner that can scan your 35mm or medium format negs. Hoodi did a good job with his medium format transparences on a flat bed.
