I have been offered some skyports at a great price and I am contemplating taking them ...However I have 4 PW+2's....work extremely well but I dont have the remote power control on them....

Do you think it is worth selling the PW+2's and getting these Skyports ?

Any view either way? ...help me to jump or stay....oh and by the way, my studio lights are Elinchrom Style RX's

I suppose theres the compatibility issue with using Skyports with EL flash heads, plus there is the option on some EL heads to be able to adjust the modelling light from the Tx unit on the camera. I don't think there's any sync advantage.

I used Skyports for speed lights and they were great - reliable and the charge lasted - but I wanted a more compact option (with a hotshoe) for speed light use. For studio use I think they're bang-on.

I've used both system for many years.

I moved to Skyports when I replaced all my heads to Elinchrom BX. For me, covering mainly events, having the triggers built in was a big advantage.

However, I've found them to be far less reliable than PWs. Repeat shooting ( firing twice in quick succession) doesn't seem to work (and it is the triggers, not the lights before someone mentions that).

It's rare (for me) to change the settings much on the lights once the shoot is under way.

I continue to use them because of the convenience, but given my time again I don't think I'd go down that route personally.

New pocket wizard III are going to be cheaper than the II's, why not get them.

Thanks Jeremy,
I did not even comsider the issue of speed of triggering/fast shooting.

Tiler,
Unfortunately the PWIII's are not on offer to me at a great price. However saying that, I looked at the spec on the net and the early reviews do not offer too much over the PWII's...Price will be the big seller for the PW3's.

I would not trade in the PW+2's for the PW3's...but I think someone buying new will definitiely get them. I would have considered them if they were ETTL compatible.

Tug, what is the need for Ettl with studio strobes?, you didn't say you were using speedlites or not in post 1.

Hi Tom, I am using Elinchrom RX heads in the studio but I also have a couple of 580exii's which i use with Flex TT1 and 2 TT5's

My reference to Ettl was about the new PWIII's

The benefits of the skyports is the remote level control of the Eli Heads in the studio

Why care about the PW III's. You can get Pocketwizard adaptors for the RX lights as well. Power ST4 units. They allow you to control the RX lights using the Ac3 unit from the camera using a mini or a flex. Much more usable.
