morning folks

me and the wife are planning a day trip to skye sometime this coming week. the principal reasons being for me to take some shots, and for some lunch at the 3 chimneys....

the wife won't get up at 3 in the morning to be there for sunrise, but she may be prepared to stay till sunset. so i'm looking for ideas for places to go to get some nice shots. i've only been to portree once, so my knowledge of skye is non-existant really, and i'm quite happy to do the popular shots this time and head back on my own to explore a bit more etc. etc.

any suggestions/directions much appreciated.

thanks in advance

derek

Ah the Three Chimneys...if your driving down the road so its on your left hand side, I spent a week in the next cottage down on the right hand side (High Tide Cottage). You should definitely head to Neist Point (have a look at the first image in my Panormic gallery on my website) as the views there are stunning, especially at sunset and its only about a 10-15 drive further down the road past the 3 C's. Also head to Elgol Village, the drive down Elgol road to get there is about 15 miles long and full of stunning scenery but nothing will compare to the view when you get to the village ;)

Agree that if you are that far west (3 chimneys) then Neist point is a must visit. It is a long journey to Elgol and Loch Slapin from there so would consider doing the Quiraing and surrounding area first (East facing) which only leaves Dunvegan and Uig in the north left to do. Do the south/central on another day

Thats a good point, it is a long old drive between them!

If you have the time, a trip from Uig across to Harris on the ferry?

When you turn left at Sligachan onto the A863 towards the 3 chimneys, turn left about half a mile up the road and head towards Glenbrittle campsite IV47 8TA. This takes you through the Cullins and is beautiful scenery. The campsite is the end of the road but there are some car parking spaces just before it that give easy access to the beach. It's only about 30 minutes drive from the main road and well worth a look.

If you're into camping/motor homing it is one of the best "rural" campsites we've been to. Rustic with amazing views, peace and quiet and very relaxed - nature at it's best.

Tip no. 1 take bug spray if you plan to be there early morning or at dusk!

I ended up wearing a full mosquito headnet too when trying to take snaps!

It doesn't matter where you go on skye you won't be disapointed!

Oh also, from our cottage we saw Otters, Sea Eagles, Seals and lots of other birds so if you have tiem maybe walk along the water front along the rocks!
wow! I'm planning a trip to scotland, Skye is on the list...after reading this lot might have just sold it, landscapes and lots of wildlife too! :D
so, what to do for two weeks skye only or fumble up the west coast etc ?

we recently spent a week on Skye, and the near constant rain made for a very disappointing trip :(

Highlight for us though was spotting a golden eagle being attacked by a hen harrier on the road down towards Ord - and area described as hen harrier central according to the guide in the sea eagle visitor center just outside Portree

self catering...would camp but with the thought of constant rain thinking self catering cottage etc might be the best. trying to figure out where's a good place to stay, seems like there's a fair bit there

thanks for the tips folks.

the weather's not looking very good for the days i have available this week though, so i may have to cancel some appointments and try for thursday.

The forecast is bad right up to Friday. Sligachan Inn is a great place to stay on Skye. Fairly central, good beer, good food, brilliant scenery.

and millions of midges:help:

we're booked at the chimneys for thursday, so thursday it is whatever the weather is. midges are nothing new to us either so we'll both survive quite well on that front.

thanks for all of the above.
