Just a quick rant, I'm now on the phone with Sky as I've been a customer for around 8 years and thought I would browse on their site for the latest packages and found I'm being charged more than a new customer joining! I don't understand how they can get away with it but I guess if you don't look, you won't know!

We'll see how this phone call goes (5 minute queues apparently!)

sounds about right for any company these days.

best deals are always to get new customers in the door for tv/phone/insurance/gas/electric etc etc etc

I've rang them on a number of occasions and always managed to receive something I wanted free, or a reduced bill. I generally call about every 12-18 months.

The last call was based around the half price package for 6 months for new customers being posted to me as an existing customer. Ultimately they reduced my TV package by half for 9 months.

I think I need to call them up soon, been a customer in my own right for nearly 4 years now, moved in March but still haven't let them know...... was going on the basis that I could actually cancel and we could get a new account in my wife's name ;)

I have heard recently that they seem desperate to retain customers so I guess the likes of Talk Talk and BT are having an undesired affect on their business ;)

Apparently that's OK so long as your name doesn't appear on the account and it's a different account number.

Another tip I got inadvertently from the guy I ended up speaking to is that if you hang up and call back within 5 mins, you're sent directly to a supervisor. Not sure if it's always the case, but I was on a call with a guy who (being nice about it) didn't have English as a first language and clearly didn't know the sky system. After 5 mins of struggling to get him to correctly take my name and address, I gave up and hung up, then called straight back. I ended up speaking to Alistair who advised I'd gone straight to him as I'd called back within 5 mins of a previous unclosed call, and as a supervisor they see this as a call they ought to take.

Half way through the phonecall and they had to cut me off due to a fire alarm WTF!!!
They said I could have a £2.75 reduction on my monthly bill. The only channels I watch are Sky one and Discovery, the rest are rarely viewed! Might have to think about streaming in the future as it's getting ridiculous with the monthly fees. It's not draining the bank account but what's the point of spending money on something that's not used :D

wouldnt count on it, i have friends that recently tried to bluff with the "i want to cancel" to try and get a deal but ended up with no sky :D

that's all right - just live with no sky for a few months then sign up to one of the new subscriber packages

it needs to be in a different name within a certain period if i remember rightly.

6 months I believe from my conversations with them.

I phoned up awhile back, said i needed to cut my bills and re look at what i wanted etc, i cut my bill by half and since then got movies half price for 6 months, which i've now stopped and got a free sky demand connector...

I originally had everything except sport, but they said if i went to entertainment extra you get all channels anyway at half the price... except movies of course, but if you want them they often do the half price deal

yep many "tricks" to use....

Last time IO phoned to cancel (as not really watching it and not having virgin either)

I was asked what I wanted to keep me to stay (no new contract)
"6 months free please!"

deathly silence - got put through to a supervisor who couldn't give me 6 months free, but could give me 12 months 1/2 price! :cuckoo::cuckoo:

I had multiroom, sports & movies - something like £72.50. Told them I would cancel as too much and they did a 12 month half price deal (aside from multiroom). At a later date i was offered HD for 12 months for £2,50 pm (was on HD a while back). When this deal finished, a week later I rang to say I couldnt afford and was going to freesat and they did another 12 month deal at half price.

That's why I haven't notified them of my new address yet ;)

Old address in my name, new address in wife's name as a new customer.... game on

Ditched Sky before they went digital, don't miss it in the least. Reading that figure of £70plus quid for a subscription nearly made me tea snort!

I have always found Sky will give you new customer offers as an existing customer if you phone up and ask for the deals. I have an excellent package just by negotiating. Never accept their first response, always say. "I'm sure you could do better for a loyal customer".

Originally we were paying a tad more for other utilities. Due to our location (Rural Salisbury downs) we had BB with AOL for 4 years (which we left thank god) and moved over to Plusnet for BB (which we are over the moon with on an 8mb line) at that time we also had line rental and talk through Sky but have now changed over to Plusnet for the phone & BB as it worked out cheaper than sky. We've only got the Entertainment extra+ package as we found the movies were always repeated - easier to use Lovefilm or borrow a DVD/Blu Ray from a friend. Over the last 2 years we've been receiving letters from Sky stating due to them struggling that our monthly bill would increase by just under £2, we're now paying around £38pm for the package even though online it clearly states to new customers that they get the same for £32 now it's only a difference of a few £'s but I'm more annoyed on the fact that we've been with them for several years and receive no updates apart from increase charges :D
I may just cancel the thing and wait, we're not in a virgin area due to the astronomical expense it would cost to lay a cable! The only negatives about living in rural areas is the telecommunications side of things but I guess having no traffic outside / street lighting makes up for it in many ways :)

Sounds daft, but they just want you locked in for 12 months.

Got ride of sky a few years ago found it cheaper to buy the season dvd for the shows i want from the us. Even better with blue ray no region lock (most of the time). A few guys in work are getting sky via another source, just surprised sky have not stopped it like they did with the analog cards.

I'd had enough of £36 a month so asked to cancel

2 weeks into the cancelation period I get a phone call , we're carrying out a survey

The long and the short of it is I ended up with 12 months @ £18 a month

It runs out in a couple of months but I won't be going back to £36 a month, if they don't leave it at £18 I'll just cancel it

Sounds daft, but they just want you locked in for 12 months.

I expressly asked that and received written confirmation that we were not locked in.

I worked for sky for 3 years in the upgrades/downgrades/new sales/customer service and I can safely say that what Alistair and the other fella have told you is absolute nonsense. Its good that you got everything sorted but someone's been pulling your leg :-)

My experience,

I cancelled sky last Aug after they failed to provide broadband at two attempts, 2 days off and no visit either day. Got huff on with customer services and cancelled everything, had only been on the basic £21 per month contract. Got a few offers of half price but said I'd never give them another penny so stuck to my guns. At the end of December I received a call offering 4 months full package (non hd) for free, no contract, just call at the end or would be on a rolling monthly contract at full charge. Enjoyed the sports for 4 months then cancelled. 1 month passes with various half price offers again then another call offering 6 months full service (non hd) for free, again with no contract, so of course now I'm on my 9th month of the year with free sky and still another 2 to go. Best thing I ever did was tell them where to stick it!

Calling and getting half price is a common one, I've done this for both my parents, separate addresses, saves quite a few quid but sky are happy to have a signed up customer as pointed out earlier. You don't ask, you don't get, it really is that easy.

Finally got a reduction (Allbeit small) but at first I was speaking to a very rude individual in a middle eastern contact centre who said I was already receiving a generous discounted package and that if I moved to the £32 per month package I would also have to pay £10 for it to be in HD of which I called her a liar as the website clearly stated 49 HD channels included for a monthly fee of £32, she then umm & arhhh'd until she said she would put me through to a supervisor which was a scottish chap. He said he was sorry yada yada yada, I asked about a new HD box with Wifi built in (not that I need it as the house has been CAT6'd) he said the box would be £29 so I said sod off to that one, in the end I said that I could get BTVision for £19.99 per month through our BB to which he said he would reduce our package to £29 pm, I agreed on it as I couldn't be bothered to haggle any further, we've saved £8 a month I guess! I think I'll definitely go down the streaming route eventually. I just find it handy having Sky for Game of Thrones etc!

I've been a Sky customer since the beginning and only really have it for the sport channels. I have the whole package HD 3D etc etc. I phoned to cancel as I was really only watching the sport and don't see why I should have to pay for other packages just to have it. I was asked by the advisor what I would like and replied " let me have it free", which I have for 6 months.
After the 6 months I can cancel, which I will do as I can get just the sports channels from Talk Talk for £30 a month. If I kept with Sky my bill would be more as they increased the cost inSeptember.

I beat SKY years ago - after YET ANOTHER price hike I contacted them and wrote I hereby inform you of my notice to decrease my outgoing expenses. Due to increasing costs and overheads your services are no longer required. I have paid my last payment to you and I will not make the same mistake ever again - this is NOT open for negotiation and is final.

Thank you for all you have done in the past.

Yours (no longer)

Mr ................

Thats 5000-ish quid ago and I am a richer man for it!!

Walk away from them you dont need em!
