Guys i was on the phone to sky looking for 2 x Galaxy s20 phones. Guy states £31 per month for 24 months and i said great. We go through credit check and everything is fine then he says it's swap 24 which is actually a 36 month contract and the last 12 are at a reduced rate. p***ed me right off. Took me through a credit check for absolutely nothing as I'm not interested in a 36 month contract.

I asked to complain and he said my manager will take this forward. w******s.

best to buy your own phone and just go SIM only
check Amazon

If you can afford to buy the phones outright Very have knocked £279 off the price for the S20 5g,
You can even find a couple of business sellers on Ebay selling UK phones with a full 2 year warranty with Samsung for quite good prices.
Be very careful if you decided to buy from Amazon (although they are not cheaper than Very), make sure it states UK version otherwise you'll end up with a 1 year warranty EU version and Samsung will not honour the warranty meaning you'd have to send it back to the seller and they have to send it back to the country they bought it from for repair.

@hashcake yeah good advice about the UK version, i just bought 2x xiomi phones off Amazon and double checked they were the global versions.
i just don't understand the thing about being robbed by 24/36 month contracts? you wouldn't commit to that with car, house insurance?

Some people don’t have the ability to buy a mobile outright do they. I’d have thought that was obvious.

If I remember correctly the idea behind 24 month or longer contracts was to allow the phone companies to be able to subsidise the costs of the phones.
But, as we know each new generation of flagship phones tends to increase in price whether they are sim free or on a contract.
Up until now I have always gotten a good deal with EE via carphone warehouse (hence being with EE since 1999).
Now carphonewarehouse have dropped EE and 02, the upgrade deals with EE are nowhere near as good.
I point blank refuse to pay fifty quid or more a month for a contract.
My contracts with an upgrade average use to be £30-35 a month.
EE wanted silly money to upgrade to a Samsung S20 5G and I just wasn't prepared to pay it.
Even if I had bought the phone via a legit ebay business seller with a UK phone and Samsungs 2 year warranty I would have saved money but with the Very deal it was a no brainer.
I'm going sim only with EE for a good data allowance for just about half the price of my previous contract.
A good friend of mine (and phone guru) has been banging on for years about buying phones and going sim only, however, I couldn't justify dropping a lot of money in one hit on an expensive phone so stayed with contracts.
If I can get deals on a sim free phone again in the future I'll just stick with that and upgrade every 2-3 years.

It doesn't actually work out cheaper. The s20 is reduced to £650 just now and I'd be roughly a tenner a month for the contract so it's very similar in cost.

but it means you have control from day 1 you can choose to move networks etc
being locked in serves only them?

Depends whether you have a pay-as-you go or a monthly contract
I've just finished my one year contract with EE so now not contracted but the plan/price has remained the same
As with @hashcake I was with EE from it's Tmobile days and then changed 2 years ago as I was offered what seemed like a great deal for both phone and internet, what a disaster that was, thankfully only a one year contract
Now back with EE for both this time
