whats it like?

im currently about to subscribe to sky which is gonna cost me about £20 a month,

but im also re-evaluating my broadband situation because im currently paying £25 for an "upto 8mb" connection via freedom to surf but my local exchange isnt enabled for more than 2mb and that iant gonna change in the near future, so basically im paying for something i aint getting.

so i was thinking maybe if it was half reasonable i might switch the whole shabang to sky, and id be getting sky tv and broadband for pretty much the same outlay as i was getting internet for previously.

any experiences? are they truely pants (i,e lots of downtime etc)?

my neighbour has sky broadband, they told me that at first it used to disconect about once or twice a day, but its settled down now and they have no problems with it, speed seems to be consistant ( on 8mb get about 6.5-7 mb).
of course it might be different in your area, but here it seams to be good.

alxxx

To get Sky Broadband your exchange needs to have Easynet LLU enabled to find details on your exchange go here

My personal experience with Sky BB has not been good to be honest, i was one of the first to subscribe so could have been "teething" problems. I have never been able to get above 3Mb although my line can support around 6Mb.

The connection is pretty stable now after a lot of time on an 0870 number.

Not trying to put you off, just want you to go in with your eyes open so to speak, you may well be ok. Every ISP has it's share of satisfied and unsatisfied customers.

Well at least I am not paying for it and got Sky+ for free as a sorry.

I started a thread along these lines awhile age and the responses were fairly negative. I never did bother

Sky BB tends to be good when it works but when you get a problem getting through to Tech Supp is another matter.

I've installed it for many people and it is a relatively straightforward matter.

Just checked mine, only ADSL but it states that in Q42009 it will switch to 21CN, what does that mean:shrug:

Does that mean I will get a better service than at present, I am with BT and my connection can be very erratic, down as low as 500kb and then seconds later up to approx 2mb.
Lately it has been really slow to open pages despite speeds approaching 2mb for instance it took about 5-10 seconds to open the reply page.
I am loath to ring Bangladesh or anywhere else that might pick up my call as in the past it has been an utter waste of time and unnecessary expense on my phone bill, they just sit there with a question and answer sheet.:annoyed:

Rant over:D:

isn't the speed of an ADSL connection kind of dependent on how near you are to a BT exchange? I know that used to be the case.

so the sky broadband package requires LLU rather than just standard ADSL enabled BT line?

ive just noticed that my exchange has been enabled for easynet/sky

I had Sky installed last year. Had the tv, telephone and broadband installed. I had the 8mb broadband package and I'm getting around 6mb which is plenty.

The router Sky supply is crap with problems such as dropped connections, slowness etc. My pc engineer recommended one by Linksys. It looks like you could contact aliens with it but what a difference. Never had any problems since swapped over to Linksys.

I understand Sky are bringing our new router which hopefully will address the problems.

Here's a useful Sky users website:

I've just joined see surf speak package, get the telly on tuesday, I've supplied them with my mac code that grudgingly came from Pipex so I don't know when they will make the change. Hopefully I should'nt have too much downtime.

Northstreet1, I am currently using a sweex modem/router (wired) do you reckon I should just leave it on? I have no need for a wireless one as I only have one computer. Router is for when the kids and grandkids dump their computer on me to fix for them.
