Hi I hope you can help me? I was with TalkTalk (my last phone bill was £33.45. I wandered into a Carphone Wearhouse shop looking to upgrade my mobile phone, and we got talking about Sky broadband. he signed me up to Sky Unlimited talk anytime (is that the right name for this package?)

Apparently I can use the internet 24/7, and and the landline (not lieterally as ear would fall off!) for £24.50 a month (or did he say year?) and then £29.50 when the offer ends.

They are going to send me a modem and my live date is 20th August. I have had a letter from TalkTalk stating that I need a MAC code otherwise they said my internet wouldn't work.

I am a bit worried about ringing them because the customer services are not very good and they have Indian accents which I cannot understand. My main reason is that they will refuse me this MAC code haranguing me to stay with them. :bang:

Can you please advise me what I should do please? I thought Sky would be sorting this out.

Many thanks and hope you can help me.

you will need to get the MAC code, sky wont be able to do this on your behalf.

you just have to be persistent.

I will ring up anyway, after I have it what do I need to do afterwards?

The only problem you may have getting your MAC code is if you're still under contract with TalkTalk

Either way, congratulations on pulling away from Talk Talk - the UK's worst broadband and phone provider on record!
Just phone them and ask for the MAC code, they say it will take 5 days but it's usually done within 2, they will try and bargain with you on a better deal but don't bother falling victim to this. Just get the code and run :)

Thanks for your reply. I rang TalkTalk this morning to try and get the MAC code and got no where! The bloke (Indian) kept rattling on about how shocked he was that I wanted to leave then proceeded to tell me about how another customer left and came back etc etc.

Also asked why I wanted to leave (because your a !"£$% company ) No I really said because where I live doesn't support them.

Then he started banging on about this customer and I said (politely) that's very fine but can you give me the MAC code now please? I still got no where and he had the cheek to say I sounded like I was in a hurry! So I politely ended the call and I now have to get my Support worker involved, who is making noises about reporting the incident to Offcome.

I have had words with Sky who say TalkTalk are well known for this tactic, and I don't need the MAC code. But I will have a final attempt tomorrow about getting it just in case.

Unfortunately you have to get borderline rude/obnoxious with companies like this and just demand rather than ask.

They will work hard to try and retain your business (which I suppost you can't blame them for) but ultimately they must give you this code if you ask for it.

You will need the mac and they are obliged to provide it. Tell them the next call is to ofcom.

The most straightforward way of acquiring a mac is via the online chat feature on the web site. Not all do this, but most do. It means you are not passed to the customer retention team.

But in any case, it's your own fault for dealing with the two worst customer service performers in the market. No sympathy......

If SKY say you don't need a MAC code, then you don't, simples!

Whenever I require anything from a company, mobile/Sky/Gas etc, my tactic is to keep politely saying 'that's as may be but can you give me the *whatever I need* now please"
Any of their questions about if I would like a discount/free months etc are met with a solid 'no, not interested, I just want you to give me *whatever again* please'. It only takes a couple of minutes for them to get the message that they are wasting their time and they may as well give me the info and move on to the next caller.

Don't ever give them any hint that you may be persuaded to stay and you should be fine.

Thanks for your replies I have sorted it out, apparently TalkTalk are being sued and are also being investigated by offcom after the death of a boy after they hindered the emergency services.

Have been told by Sky that my internet will be a bit slow for 10 days whilst they check my broadband speed. Any Sky customers out there that have had this please?

Yes, slow to start with then it will build up but don't expect to get what is says in the advert for example if your paying 20 mb download speeds you only get what the exchange gives you. I am on a 20 mb connection, downstream is set at 17mbs but a speedcheck (namesco broadband) shows as 12.5mbs download speed this afternoon, as the crow flies I am only a quarter mile from my local exchange.

I hope it will speed up...

It should get faster once they adjust your line, I take it no MAC code action needed by you?

Apparently not, so we'll see what happens. have to twiddle my thumbs for ten days and be patient :) Lots of complaints about TalkTalk, If I had known I would never have gone with them in the first place.

Yes all the folk talking about MAC codes need to update their knowledge ;)

Oh, by the way, I am with Talk Talk and all the companies before them, whilst I agree about their "help desks", you won't get any cheaper or reliable than them in my experience.

Just a theory, talktalk are LLU, Sky are LLU but different backhaul networks and exchange equipment. There shouldn't be anything to "migrate", unlike switching between providers using the BT IP network and BT exchange equipment, which might explain the lack of requirement for a MAC.

I've been with the same broadband ISP since I could get ADSL, so I've no actual experience of changing ISP. I have moved my backhaul from Be to talktalk though, and am about to move it again to BT 21CN as I'll be ordering FTTC tomorrow (all with the same ISP).

Not a theory :D

What exactly is LLU?
Local Loop Unbundlling. The ISP has their own termination equipment and backbone at the exchange instead of renting it off BT. Basically, the copper cable comes in through the BT pipes and then gets attached to Sky or Talk Talks equipment.

I know there "shouldn't" but stranger things have happened inside a BT exchange.

Anyway sky say they're happy with no need for the mac so I'd go with what they say over talk talk.

.... Another, aye right required........

.......now then Neil, are you going to boost Specsavers profits?

What's your point. I was saying if TT were stating they needed to go down the mac code route then sky wouldn't be able to do that on anyone's behalf..

My point is two-fold, you never mentioned TT and you (and others) didn't have a clue about the need for MAC codes.

Now put down your spade and stop digging!

Yes all the folk talking about MAC codes need to update their knowledge ;)

what are you on about? The majority of transfers between providers still require a mac. Both TT and Sky supply over LLU & LLX so it was quite feasible that a mac would be required - as per the opening discussion.
