Is there anything available that does a good job? Is a grey card still the best bet?

That looks interesting, Tom, but from what I've been reading it doesn't always help get correct skin tones.

So, a daft question: does monitor calibration affect the CMYK numbers in an image? I've been playing around with the classic numbers, but changes always look awful on my, admittedly uncalibrated and generally cold, monitor.

Just calibrating a monitor won't change the RGB or CMYK values themselves. However you will see the image look different because of the calibration, You may then want to change the colour of the image, this will change the colour values.
