It looks likely that I'll be going skiing (for the first time) in January to Bulgaria. Obviously I'll want to take some decent photos, but I have the feeling that lugging around a Canon 40D, lenses and flash etc.. is not a sensible approach. So I was thinking of a compact, but am really at a loss as to which one. Initial thoughts are that it should be built well (cos I suspect I'll be spending a fair bit of time falling over :) ), and able to handle operating in cold conditions. Does anyone have any recommendations/experience/tips?

Many thanks,

Conrad.

According to last months digital photo, where they used three underwater (1m down in a swimming pool), then froze them (in the household freezer), then dropped them on concrete from 1.5m. The test winner was the Oly Mju 1030SW, runner up the Ricoh G600. The Pentax Optio W60 didn't have any impact protetion so they didn't drop it.

All three appear to handle the water and freeze tests (but needed to warm up a little before the battery would work) well and shots were taken afterwards. The same for the Oly and Ricoh after being dropped.

I'm sure there will be others about out there.

HTH.

If you want the DSLR control in a compace I'd recommend the G9/10. Infact I might try to get my hands on one of these...

If you are learning I'd advise against taking your SLR kit on the hill. Even a small rucksack can unbalance you easily.

If you are more confident I'd recommend either a Dakine Sequence Camera bag, or one of the F-Stop rucksacks as they are designed with skiing/snowboarding in mind.

I used to take a compact with me & carry it in a bum bag with the pouch round the front. I had some major spills but the camera was ok (and it never hurt me)

I have the Olympus 1030sw and it is the perfect camera for skiing, mountain biking etc. I just don't worry about it. I have taken shots 2mtrs+ down and the quality rocks.
Its about the only camera I would trust in cold or wet situations.

ps, not bad shots either ;)

Excellent,

Thanks for the good advice - looks like an Olympus 1030 it is!!

I'll be sure to post some pics (although I've a feeling they may be of dodgy angled horizons and closeups of the ground!!!) :)

Cheers,

Conrad. :D
