sizing photos questions....

evening all

this is probably a real dumb-ass question but..........

what size/ration do you folks crop your photos too when photoshopping them? is there a general industry standard so to speak, or would you size them all 3:2 and then re-size/crop specific photos for enlargements???

the reason i ask is that i processed a bunch of photos recently, took them to tescos and had them printed 6x4, but also had some enlargements printed 10x12" and it chopped off a bunch of the photos which sucked but was no doubt my fault.

is it possible to get 12" prints that are proportional to the camera frame sensor size?

apologies if the above is not very clear, but it's the best i could do to describe it.

I usually crop the pic fior the family album type photos to 7 x 5. This is because you can easily buy albums and frames to suit that size of print.

For larger prints I use the same plan really and print to a size that I can get frames for. So A4, A3 and the like. I hardly ever just get a large print done without a a good idea what I'm going to be doing with it.

The place I use for my processing has a machine with a 12 roll, So I suspect there are lots of sizes you can get printed to 12" wide.

most dslrs produce images in a ratio of 3:2 so if you want to print different sizes without bits missing you will have to crop in 6x4

you can then print in 6x4 9x6 12x8 etc etc

i think thats the case anyway!!

Those are the sizes i use yes. i always leave out the 10x8 as it means a chop!

Depends on what size I want them printed in the end - for 6x4, I resize (rather than crop) to 6" x 4" @ 300ppi but for home printing at A?, I tend to be lazier and just crop to the appropriate size at a sensible dpi - 300 for A4 and below, 200 for A3 - I can accept the compromise in quality the interpolation gives me. Other sizes (up to A4) get cropped at 300dpi (I sometimes crop to the square format [or scan 6x6 film] or 10x8 if I have an image that looks better at that [and a frame!])

That's a real pain - either do your own cropping at home to the 10" x 12" format or go to the next 3:2 format up or down and trim the print to fit the frame

Yes - but you may have to have an 8" x 12" image printed on a larger "canvas" - speak to the printer you use and ask.

Most printers these days should provide paper which allows you to maintain your 3:2 format without cropping - 6X9, 12x8, etc.
