Flickr (the free version) offers viewers a range of sizes, including 500x392, 640x502, etc. So what size is best to upload? Presumably, anything resized on Flickr to view at the alternate sizes is going to lose sharpness?
not sure about the free version (i think its the same). But if you upload a 1024x786 image, the largest it can be viewed on flickr is that size. Flickr will automatically resize it to the lower versions
Yes, it will resize down, but what I am wondering is, if I use sharpening (output sharpening for display) when Flickr resize down won't that cause all sorts of problems with sharpness (although its harder to see on smaller images, I guess)?
It can cause images to look way over sharpened if your 1024 x 786 is very sharp to start with. On your photo stream images are shown as "Medium" size 640 x 405, unless you go to "All size" and view larger. If I am going to post an image on Flickr I will either sharpen so it looks correct at 640 (longest side) or check it looks ok at 640 x *** after I have sharpened at it's original size. Most people don't click to view it larger so my way of thikng is to make it look good at "Medium" 640 x ***
