We can't really tell you without knowing the lens(es) you want to use and the crop factor of your body. If you can provide those we'll have a bit more to work with
0.5m wall to background (more if you want to backlight it)
1.5m background to subject(s)
3m subject to lens
1m lens to wall behind photographer
If using the 50mm as a middle ground that will give you a 1.44m by 0.96m field of view which will probably do for small groups of say 4 people close together.
You don't want to use lenses that are too wide as they can cause distortions, using a longer lens helps this but the trade off is you need more space.
I'm sure some of the experienced studio/portrait guys can clear up anything I've left out
