He's a dick. Most disliked player in world rugby. And that's from the English press.

Not disputing that but this particular incident is a nothing story quite frankly.

Marler apologised at half time (before anyone got to him) so might get mitigating circumstances and a reduced ban - 4 weeks reduced to 3?

Thomas will get 6 weeks for reckless contact with the eye area - 6 weeks reduced to 4 for good record & apologising?

It was fine day at Murrayfield yesterday although it was a bit worrying in the first five minutes, we don't win often so it's good excuse to celebrate in the liquid style, even on a Sunday night, not so hot at work this morning.

So Six Nations Rugby have now given the go ahead to say whatever derogatory comments you like to a player as long as you say sorry after. What an disgrace that Marler has not been sanctioned for this and also the forearm in the face. Makes you wonder if they have done it to avoid upsetting the English RFU and their new coach. After all they wouldn't want to p*** on England's parade would they by having morals and standing up for other people. They should be ashamed of themselves for this decision. Absolute disgrace.

Agree 100%, Gary.

The fact that he (Marler) admitted he'd hit Evans, and apologised to Lee & Six Nations rugby should have been enough for some kind of sanction.

Lee has publicly declared his pride at his family's heritage, so it's no secret. Can you imagine the fallout if a player had used the "n" word to Itoje????

Rugby has always had a reputation for being tough but gentlemanly, I think the commissioners have damaged this by failing to take action. Compare to the reaction to the "footballers at Cheltenham" incident - swift, appropriate and decisive action.

At the time of writing, it looks like the IRB are looking into this, to Marler may not be out of the woods yet.

For the Six Nations to say that it was said in the heat of the moment is wrong. Marler was not involved in the initial incident. He walked over and made himself part of it. I have no axe to grind with Marler, I think he's a excellent prop and I'm sure he regrets it but it's about appearances and by leaving it they have now set a precedent that will be very difficult to change if another incident occurs. Big mistake and the disciplinary committee have approached this the wrong way. First and foremost their concern should have been about defending individuals right to be treated with respect irrespective of nationality, religion or background. They have spectacularly failed in this regard.

Why would they not want to upset the English RFU or Eddie Jones? I don't understand that or your thinking that they'd be p*****g on England's parade...

I agree with you to a extent, although I do wonder if Gatland's comment saying it was just banter have any bearing on the decision? and if we are being perfectly honest, there is a lot worse said and done on the field.

Samson also issued a statement saying it was banter.

Sticks and stones and all that, they are all well above worrying that kind of banter and I'm also sure after meeting a number of international players Samson would just laugh about all the fuss over nothing. The forearm smash that is a completely different kind of offence where damage could easily have occurred and potentially put a man out of the game. IMO that should be stamped on hard by the powers that be.

Because the ERFU are the big noise, or think they are, with Eddie Jones being dismissive of the Welsh RFU comments on this yesterday. think that they didnt want to do anything to take any gloss away from the potential Grand Slam. The disciplinary committee have made an arse of it and in future will struggle to censor anyone for similar comments.

Surely, a red-card offence??? ;)

And now it looks like Six Nations & RBS are refusing to tell World Rugby who was responsible for the decision not to sanction Marler. For the life of me, I can't understand what the hell disciplinary matters have to do with the tournament sponsor!!

Hoping for a reason to celebrate this evening but I reckon the Irish will be tougher opposition later, fingers crossed.

Would be good to get wins on the trot but I too think the Irish will prove tougher than Italy and France did!

Good win for Wales. Certainly looked good for much of the game today, nice to see much of the game open and running.

Have to say even as an Englishman I do love watching the Welsh back line, they are superb at times.

Can any one tell me why the players singsong takes so long these days. It use to be 1 anthem for each side. Now it seems to be more like an opera each.

Only Ireland when they're at home have 2 anthems.

From Wiki:

"The Irish rugby union team is one of many teams that draws its players from across the Island of Ireland and therefore can contain players from either Ireland or Northern Ireland. In the past this has led to issues surrounding certain flag and anthem usage. When Irish internationals were played alternately in Belfast and Dublin, the UK national anthem was played for matches in Belfast and the national anthem of Ireland "Amhrán na bhFiann" was played for matches in Dublin.[citation needed]No anthem was played at away games. In the 1987 Rugby World Cup, The Rose of Tralee was used as anthem due to Northern Ireland's political situation.

Since April 1995, a specifically composed anthem named "Ireland's Call" has been used exclusively by the Irish team at away games.[27] This has prompted some players and supporter complaints that "Amhrán na bhFiann" should also be played.[28] At games played in Dublin "Ireland's Call" is always used alongside "Amhrán na bhFiann".[29] This use of "Amhrán na bhFiann" has caused similar complaints from players and supporters within a segment of the unionist community in Northern Ireland.[citation needed] With Ireland's friendly game against Italy in the run up to the 2007 Rugby World Cup scheduled to be held in Belfast, there were calls for "God Save the Queen" to be used alongside "Ireland's Call" but this was turned down by the IRFU[30] with the explanation given that both Ireland's Call and Amhrán na bhFiann are only played together in Dublin, and that outside Ireland, the anthem of Ireland's Call is exclusively used.[31]"

Thanks although it took me longer to read that.Than it did to watch the game.Good game though.

Its been a decent campaign for Scotland, seemed to be undermined by our own discipline more than anything today, narrow defeats to England and Wales probably look more impressive now when we see how England in particular have performed, all in all I think us Scots can take some heart that we might be on the up for once!

I've played and watched the game since the late 1950's. And the dominent teams have always ebbed and flowed. Be very boring if it was always the same one.

I'm guessing ref Nigel Owens doesn't want to upset the English RFU with that try decision of Dan Coles either :-)

It's very difficult living in Wales and not giving a monkeys about rugby.

Sorry Robert but if you have no interest in the game why read the post in the first place.

Well doen England. Have to say, a huge improvement since the RWC. Deserved Champions & Grand Slam winners.

And well done Eddie Jones on "discovering" Maro Itojie - player of the tournament, IMO.

Agreed on both points, Itojie had an awesome tournament, a big second row that can play like a centre!!

My 6N team : (other than Parisse, I don't think any Italian players were up to much at all and the French....less said I think)

15. S.Hogg
14. A.Watson
13. J. Joseph
12. J Roberts
11. G North
10. D Biggar
9. D Care
8. J. Heaslip
7. J. Haskell
6 .D Lydiate
5 R Gray
4. M. Itojie
3.D Cole
2. R Best
1.A Dickinson

I wouldn't disagree with 14 of those....

For me, Heaslip at 8 has been way behind both Vunipola and Faletau.

Parisse had probably his worst 6 Nations for years, IMO. Still the stand-out Italian, and they are really going to struggle when he hangs up his boots (can't be far off, I'd have thought).

What was truly a joy to see & be a part of yesterday, was the applause for Castrogiovannni when he went off to the announcement that it would be his last International in the UK. He's been a phenomenal servant of Italian rugby.

Hear hear.

World Rugby has announced Joe Marler will face a misconduct hearing for his 'gypsy boy' slur at Wales' Samson Lee.

Whilst I think that he should've been facing a sanction from the beginning I'm more worried about them stepping in this much after the fact.

How long is the window in which a player can get cited/reprimanded? This certainly surpasses the 48 hours that every tournament usually imposes.

Saw that on Rugby Onslaught yesterday. What was he thinking????

Just a cheap-shot. Idiot!
