Sites like (and) FLICKR doing more harm than good?

It'd kinda no be so bad if the OP was just trolling.

Infact, it'd be a bloody good job of it.

But unfortunately I don't think it is so.

To me there was a slight reminiscence to the former Alpha Whiskey Papa  and his rant's about flickr

No can't be, the dummy spit was no where big enough.lol

I've noticed a trend over the past 2 years in which the bigger sites like FLICKR become the more self-gratification the users respond as a result. My own personal experience of this has been uploading newsworthy images or images in their own right that should be viewed and rated by hundreds weekly...

I don't have a flicker either, nor a facesplat page - because I can't work them. I tried with Facesplat, but got bored with it after about 5 minutes and found the page very difficult to look at, too many small boxes of stuff all over the place. Just far too "busy" a layout for me.

Does the fact I don't have a flicker account, or a facesplat account, or my own webpage mean I must be a cr*p photographer? I suppose it must do.

I suppose it must do.

according to whom?

I don't believe anyone on this thread has even implied that, let alone said it.

I don't have a Facebook account either, BTW. Never have and never will. Mostly because I have issues with the company and their attitude to the use of their users' personal data.

How can we know. Better get some photos up on Flickr and see how many positive comments you get...

That's a really weird thing to say

Some really strange attitudes in this forum. As well as the opening post (has he been back?) there was this hit and run in another thread.

Weird!

Who said Flickr is for professional/experienced photographers only?

I personally despise flickr, if only for that fact that I was sick of posting mediocre work, only to have people post stupid flashing awards telling me I was the next Christ, or that my image was the best thing ever projected onto the back of a retina.

It's impossible to post anything bad on Flickr, because a bunch of people will always tell you how utterly, unfathomably amazing you are in the hope that you'll click through and do the same for them.

I suspect if the OP isn't getting the applause he so craves, either his work is so monumentally bad that people cannot even bring themselves to lie in compliment, or he's just not doing what everyone else on Flickr does and posting it to 2,000 groups.

I'd suspect it's the latter, given that Hitler himself could post Polaroid snaps of his greatest crimes and still get at least one person posting the "YOU MAKE ME FEEL SPECIAL HERE'S YOUR SPECIAL BADGE COMMENT ONE RATE SEVEN NO RUDE WORDS" award.

I clearly don't view flickr etc in the same way as the OP to me it is just a photo shearing site I don't post comments or rate photos I just look at them.

What is this modern thing about having everything you do rated? Oh look at me, my photo was rated number one, or I have 750 followers on twitter etc. SO WHAT.

I'll give you 3/5 for that post.....

What, only 3/5 my feelings are hurt now and I will have to sulk and I might as well close my flickr account as well as no one ever comments on my photos.:p

The award logos are some of the most garish, eye-wateringly ugly things, which is ironic given that they're supposed to recognise the beauty of an image

is that only for the wooly minded ? or photos that are a cut above ?

the whole concept leaves me feeling a bit sheepish tbh

dinners added this thread as a favourite.

Flickr is fine if you know how to use it. if you don't like the spanglies then either ignore or delete them. I've sold photos from there and I know several other people who have too.

If someone wants to use Flickr as a social networking thing then that's fine by me. If they want help and honesty then they can get that too.

I can't really see the point of knocking Flickr or its users? If you don't like it then don't use it!..

I'm not being funny but if you don't like them silly gif etc don't join groups that use them, it's quite simple really

I'm sure I've had one or two from groups I'm not in so don't think it's a self inflicted thing really.

Well that is what the Delete and Block is for

flickr is for people too cheap or lazy to have there own photo album

I have my own web site, written by me using a text editor (none of your namby- graphical HTML editors) which includes a customised web gallery for photos.

You have convinced mr that I must therefore close my Flickr account forthwith.

Oh dear. I rather liked using it :(

Well, I don't use Flickr, but if I ever do, I'll make sure to properly research every single group I post a shot to, and hopefully that'll solve the problem. Of course, it doesn't account for the hundreds of people who post images inviting me to join OTHER groups.

Unfortunately, it's only "quite simple" as you put it, if you haven't really given it any thought. SHRUG

Well that is what the Delete and Block is for

Oh, I see what you mean. So you're saying that it's not that simple, and that further steps must be taken?

Which begs the question: Why make a silly suggestion in the first place?

I've stopped useing my flickr account really now, I only use it to temporarily store pics to link here when I need to. I did see some good, some ok stuff and then some not so good stuff on flickr and people taking artistic liscence a bit to far. "oh wow, thats amazing how did you do that?" "Well I pointed my camera at a wall and ..."

I have since descovered the delights of 500px where the work is phenominal and my meagre photographic offerings only just about qualify for their **** bin :)

Seriously what is your issue?

Well, I don't use Flickr, but if I ever do,

I'm confused - do you use flickr or not

I'm also confused as to why you are giving matt a hard time about a very simple suggestion - don't like flashy gifs don't join groups that use them, and if anyone sends you an unsolicted one delete it and block them - its hardly rocket science

and btw the solution to the former point is dont post mediocre crap on flickr - why would you want to share your mediocre shots with the world anyway ?

Bad day at the office?

I store my photos on flickr as almost an off-site backup it also allows other member of my family to logon and view private photographs.

Your statement is quite a petty generalisation would nt you say?

Seriously what is your issue?

Do you not think your first reply was a bit pointless, obvious, and slightly sanctimonious? That's the feeling I got from it. Sorry if you think my response is harsh, but stating the obvious to me is basically inferring I'm too stupid to figure it out for myself.

Well, the first reply was in past tense, and the second was pre tense. So I did use Flickr, no longer do, and should I ever I will take advice I was already aware of.

should I ever I will take advice I was already aware of.

so if you were already aware of how to avoid getting sent a bunch of animated gif awards , why didnt you avoid them ?

seems to me that it was you post on this that was pretty pointless ie complaining about something that you know how to avoid but for some reason have chosen not to :cuckoo:
