sister in law's computer hacked -help

first off, stop giving unsolicited callers information...

what questions did she answer and did they download anything onto her machine?

id be running a full malware scan before going on any site that needs a password..

that's not being hacked - that's being mugged.

she handed over details about her computer and let 'someone technical' remote on and fix it for her, no doubt phoning from Microsoft - it was just some random fisher, probably installed a load of spying software to try and obtain details for internet banking and shopping

format hard drive and reinstall windows?

Wish I could offer more than sympathy
Horrible situation to be in, caused by horrible people

They told her to access a website, AMMYY website. We have just looked it up on internet and is a nasty virus. b****r.

right but did they download anything onto her computer while they were in control? presumably they did the old logmein.com route?

and as previous, what questions did she give answers to?

Yes to download, she is not sure about logging in. We use a very good computer chap so have recommended them to her

in that case dont access anything that requires a password until its fixed. and definately dont pay for anything online. did they ask for her credit card details like they normally do?

download and run malwarebytes first off.

I dunno i always give unsolicitted callers as much info as possible - though i don't warrant that any of it is remotely accurate

i had one the other day who i kept hanging on for nearly 15 mins while i played tim nice but dim - the key answer to any request to click on ay thing being " what i'm not sure how do do that"

"no i'm not seeing the box on the screen"

"no that isnt working "

with the eventual pay off being " wait a minuite do i have to turn my computer on first " At that point the nice man from 'microsoft' suggested i perform a biologically improbable act on myself and hung up ... I think i shall complain to bill gates

My view is that while i'm wasting their time and running up their phone bill they arent bothering anyone more gullible

that aside , on the OP , what neil said

I had the usual " I have reached my error limit on my pc " the other day and it needs fixing. After stringing him along for five minutes I let rip, in the end he was shouting more abuse to me in broken English and eventualy slammed the phone down on me big time :lol: Not very business like is it?

What should she do?

A system restore to a point before the call. Then as suggestion, update Malewarebytes & Spybot and run them just as a safety check. Reset passwords on any online accounts & keep an eye on bank accounts/paypal/etc.

If she logged in to any of her online accounts (email, ebay, bank, store account etc) either during or after the call then she needs to get onto a different, CLEAN computer to change the passwords to those accounts asap (this must be done from another, known clean computer as hers could be infected and may simply collect any new passwords and pass them on to the hacker). Afterwards she can think of sorting her computer out.

It might also be worth reminding her not to store or handle petrol in the kitchen, especially if the oven's on.

Does she have access to another PC? Another house? Maybe get on with reseting passwords.

Download Malwarebytes and an AV programme onto USB and install on the PC - but disconnect from the internet first.
