Looks like they are exactly the same - apart from the shape of the height adjustment locks. From what I can see, the P-204 was superseded by the P-204C

It doesn't help you decide between the two but I bought the SIRUI P-424 for the extra weight handling.

My thoughts were it could be useful to cope with Camera + Grip + heavy lens + HEAVY arm stabilising the end of the lens :)

Perhaps I need to up my budget and go for the stronger P-424 as you suggest

Why not consider a manfrotto 679, 680 or 681 (easy enough to pick second hand from the bay) ... OK they are aluminium 3 or 4 sections but their commonest problem is that the previous owner being a smart a**e removed the loop of whatsit that you are supposed to put your hand through it to make sure the whole lot is not going flying. There is one person somewhere on this forum that has complained about the manfrotto clamp catches I find them OK. If you want carbon then I will pass :-)

I've got a Manfrotto 681 lying under my bed, it rattled / creaked every time I move my camera :D

I've gone off Manfrotto :-(

I've got a Gitzo GM2541, light, strong and the twist locks are excellent, stuck on one of the big old mud foot things to give it a bit more stability
Been superceded by a new model so might see one going cheap or at least cheaper

Good for me as I acquired last week my 3rd 055 tripod (carbon this time) but I cannot buy any more monopods as I got enough and got a few to give away as Xmas presents too :-)

One day I'll get a Gitzo - but at the moment, I'm on a budget. Really like the look of their stuff. Particularly their tripods.

Didn't realise there was a deal going on at Amazon for used products, that's good to know tijuana. That one might be a bit short though and I'm thinking about the P-424 for extra strength now. Thanks for the info though

They are returns, often like new with stuff like damaged boxes or instructions missing, sometimes the odd mark or two

I have the same Gitzo 2541 Mono Pod and it is simply superb. Very light and will support pretty much any lens going - well it was fine when I had my 600 F4 L IS and is now fine with my 800 F5.6 L IS. However it is very thin in the grip area for these lenses so perhaps not ideal - but certainly functional! For anything up to a 500 mm F4 it is all you need. Unfortunately they are pricey!

I also have the Sirui P424 - very nice piece of kit but overkill for your gear. Have a look at the Sirui P324, a little slimmer, lighter and cheaper. It would also be up to the job if you decide to go to heavier lenses in the future:

Just some food for thought?
