Sad news indeed, I was just reading that she lost her son and never really dealt with it particularly well . Her release of 'nothing compares to you' blew me away, although I hadn't realised that it was written by Prince.

think its sad myself especially as she was young, she's not been the same since her lad died apparently, i get the feeling she has taken her own life, some of my older army mates laughed due to her pro IRA stance

She later recanted and said she'd been an idiot, or words to that effect. I never felt the same about her. She also said something about abuse in the church which she got a lot of stick for but I was with her on that one.

As always, a sad loss to her loved ones and friends.
 
A sad loss, one of my favourite female artists :(
 
One news bulletin noted her tearing up a picture of the Pope and her song(?) about the abuse by Catholic Clergy.

She apparently, in the USA where she did so, was heavily criticised but in hindsight her words were prophetic at a time when the likes of the Church could do no wrong!

As for her converting to Islam, this sounds very akin to another protest singer Cat Stevens doing the same but many years ago by comparison to her converting in 2018.

Was she ever an icon? I'm wondering why this news is being plastered across the media for someone who never seemed especially significant. Not being nasty, but it's becoming quite weird.

I think maybe the repeated controversies and her own back story are perhaps more noteworthy than her musical output and impact. For me the best is "Nothing compares" which was afaik written by Prince.

You only have to look down the list of other artists she worked with, IMO very often enhancing what would have been very mediocre tracks to the level of very memorable. Amazing voice and presence, I know she was huge here in her native Ireland, but she's worked with artists across the globe - off top of my head: Public Enemy, Massive Attack, U2, The Pogues, Peter Gabriel, WIllie Nelson, Ian Brown and many more I can't think of atm - her voice lifting tracks to another level every time. I think most of her better work was in fact featuring for other artists/bands. It's a pity most will only or mostly remember her for that Prince cover [which apparently after hearing her version he pretty much 'gave' her the song]

She was and I guess always will be considered an 'icon' at least in Ireland yes.

I don't know if it's a pity. It was her biggest hit and possibly contributed to the album it was on being her most successful.

I'll make this my last post as it's moving away from RIP now but one thing I tend to dislike is professional Irish/Scots/Whatever trading on nationality and moaning about the evil English and I think at times she strayed too far that way for me.

"moaning"? seriously? ... that is what she did best, and best known for among actual fans - not Prince covers. It IS a pity, because many won't know of what she did best. It is what it is, don't like it, fine, but calling it 'moaning' is ignorance, and precisely why she did what she did. She wasn't 'trading' on anything, but telling a story, a factual one you happen not to like. Plenty of English singers do very similar, tell tales of old in their lyrics ... it's been going on for centuries don't ya know? :rolleyes:

I agree. It was a great song which she made her own.
Universal Mother was my favourite album of hers....I really liked her version of Nirvana's All Apologies....

Oh that one ripped me up, big Nirvana fan here - and to hear her sing it so pure after Kurt's death did stir up many emotions. I feel like she could have taken pretty much any song and made it hers

Yeah, I saw Prince cover her song. It was good and all but not nothing compares to her original :)

He joked that what it meant to him was... It bought Paisley Park.
 
She had a an amazing voice, and sadly, a very troubled life.
