Hi guys, this will be such a stupid question and I'm embarrased to even post it but what the heck! :lol:

Having just recently purchased my tamron 90mm marco lens I was wondering something - why is there no zoom ring and only a focus ring on the lens?

If I want to get really close to the object then it's far too blurry, I was gonna buy some extension tubes however I think it may be my technique and not the lens at fault. I love taking shots of water droplets however its just not giving me the results I was looking for...any advice most appreciated

prime lenses (fixed focal length) only have focus
zoom is to change the focal length
extension tubes is the way to go
make sure they are automatic though

There is no such thing as a stupid question :)

There is no zoom ring because there is no zoom function on the lens.

It is a fixed focal length (90mm). A zoom would always be a range of focal length e.g. 18-200mm
 
like the others have said there's no zoom ring because it's a fixed focal length lens :)

Going past that the mimimum focussing distance of the lens is about 29cm for life size reproduction. If you go in closer than that the lens won't be able to focus and your shots will be blurred :)
 
When using a macro lens you use the focus ring to change the magnification - to get maximum magnification 1:1 set the lens to manual focus and turn the focus ring to set the minimum focus distance , then move the camera closer / further away from your subject to get focus.

quite the "doh!" moment I had there haha

of course its a fixed lens...och well! I can stop scratching me head over this one then :lol:
