Very simple question, with a very big BUT

I've read dozens of reviews, too many forum opinions, so what I want to know is :-

What is the best camera system ?

Here is the BUT. I want hard evidence from an independent assessment undertaken in an objective, reproducible way that is not open to question or opinion.

When it comes to the simple question of what's the best camera, it's a free for all for all the opionionated, subjective, reviewers to rate their favorite (at that point in time) manufacturer.

So are there any genuine test results out there that provide the answer.

If you know of them would you please post the links so that I can get an unbiased answer.

Thanks

There is no such thing. Each system has their pro's and con's. And whats good for one person, will be no good for another (ergonomics and requirements wise).

If it was possible, don't you think we would all have THE BEST CAMERA!!

Be wary of this path Graham. Unless your requirements for a camera kit are purely scientific, getting drawn in to the world of specifications and performance plots can hide the heart of photography.

I don't think that there is a current model that wont deliver a good quality file. So pick a budget, try as many different makes as you can and choose the one that feels right for you.

Ditto, I have to agree....................know you budget and get your hands on as many makes as possible and go for what feel right/comfortable to you.
Everyone has their "make" and all have they pros and cons.

Not sure there is a best camera, I have 3 cameras a 1Dsmk2 a 1DMK3 and a 40D
I cant even say what is the best of the 3 as the all do a good job for what I use them for. if canon bring out a camera witch is FF 1.3 and 1.6 crop has 10FPS to me it would be the best camera.:D

As the others say, no such thing exists (Though I kind of have a grudging admiration for Joxby's answer of Hasselblad :))

What do you want to use it for would be my first question. FF 1.3,1.5,1.6 crops all exist. Then there is 4/3.

Is fps more important to you than megapixels or the other way round?

Which lenses will you require? Some manufacturers provide more at the long end than others.

Will you be using it in a studio or will you require off camera flash in the field?

Only you can answer all those questions and should guide you to your answer. It's about a lot more than just the physics.

For out and out image quality there is of course only one answer, Sinar!

Having said that it is not exactly a camera that I would take to a football match or even for a casual walk in the countryside.

Mine gets an airing a couple of times a year if it's lucky.

You`ll never be able to find an entirely objective review which simply identifies the best SLR setup. It`s not simply that such reviews are inherently difficult to produce, but also that subjectivity plays a key role in camera and lens selection. You`ll always find some people that prefer Nikon over Canon and visa-versa irrespective of what a review may say. This will apply to you too as a buyer.

Having said that I did use lens reviews in order to compare resolution when building my setup. I used http://www.photozone.de/ which led me to buy a Tamron 17-50mm Di II as my standard zoom (which I`m totally satisified with by the way).

Also,,,if you`re interested in pure objectivity I`m wondering whether photography would really suit you, as subjectivity plays a key role in both creating images and enjoying those produced by others.

There is a best camera.

It's the one that feels comfortable when YOU hold it and falls within your budget, with the accessories YOU need to do the type of photography YOU want.

There that narrows it down doesn't it:)

I would probably agree. I used one a lot, in the labs, but that was 20 years ago, and a 10x8 negative has got the edge on resolution.:D

Thanks

The best camera is the one you've got in your hand when there is an opportunity to shoot. The best camera is the one that lets you dictate the look of the shot and you are limited by restrictive f-stops or shutter speeds.

The best camera is the camera that allows you to interpret a scene the way you want to, to conjure the image you have already made inside your head.

Check the reviews at www.dpreview.com, the best camera system is the one you find you can use and get good results out of.

Nigel

Something I found puzzling is that the dpreview users scores for the Canon & Nikon kit was lower than the main reviewers and several magazine reviews

Are Nikon & Canon users less happy with their kit than the users of other makes ???

or

Are the magazine reviews over rating the Canon & Nikon kit ???

One of the reasons I asked the question in the first place was to gauge the reaction of people to different makes and if the reviews are accurate.

This is the problem with reviews. they are the subjective comments/opinions of ONE person, just like here.

Because they are subjective you can only take their view with a pinch of salt.

Do not get hung up on reading which is the best.

All the cameras from all the manufacturers can take the shot, YOU make it great.

Buy one you are comfortable with or you will still be here next spring debating the relative merits of one over another.:)
