Barclays use either a PIN sentry. You have to enter your card into a calculator type thing, or use a mobile phone app for security
You can access your account without a pin sentry, butter limited in transferring money / making payments.

Umm but thats exactly what I have now with nationwide and what im trying to get away from, ie 8 different pieces of info :-/

You are right, as I said I've just ditched the Co-Op and the 101 different things for logging in and still needing the card reader was one of the reasons (a lack of branches was the other).

Smile - the Co-op's online bank.

Account and sort code
2 digits of your chosen 4 digit security code
Answer a random one of five security questions.

When authorising card payments you get a pop up 'Verified by Visa' window and you need to insert the requested 3 letters from your chosen word. This seems to have replaced the card reader thing which I've not had to use for a year or two.

Smile is online only, no high street presence but you can make deposits etc. at post offices.

The card reader isn't for card payments, it's for online payments/transfers (like if you buy something here and want to do a BT payment).

which is my main problem, hence not wanting a card reader of any sort. :-/

I'm with you, the overboard methods of some banks (with multiple pass numbers passwords, card readers, account number/sort code and code generators) just over complicates even a simple transfer.

your swimming upstream against the flow, just go with it and if you need to write it all down and keep the details secure.
Even if you find an account that fits your needs now chances are they will just introduce more security and you will be in the same situation, they are only interested in your security.

I bank with Tesco and Clydesdale bank and they do not offer this/

You for Tesco need a username, 6digit number and password and a mobile to recieve texts
You for CB get a customer number, password and questions and a key generator.

The banks do this to keep YOUR money safe and to ensure they DON'T lose it to CRIMINALS and have to bare the costs of putting your money back.

Perhaps they should let you just login with your name and DoB then not bail you out when your money is stolen? Would you like that?

That's surprising. I thought the Halifax system was the Lloyds system rebranded with the Halifax logo (it even say Lloyds Banking Group PLC at the top), and I could choose my own username (and even change the username within the online banking).
It's a nine digit number they sent me in a letter - I was one of the very first to apply for their online banking service when it launched so maybe it's different now, but mine hasn't changed.

I would have thought that a pin and password alone are secure enough, seeing as it locks after 3 attempts. My debit card is often blocked by verified by visa!

Yes I know this and im not arguing the point, i've said a few times that security is necessary?

Ive also said i wouldn't trust Tesco banking so thats already out and the online videos aren't very specific so that also puts me off.

Clydedale bank use the pin generator device, I've said that I do not want an account with this?

I dont think I am to be honest, theres at least 3 providers have come out in this thread that do suit my needs, ie halifax lloyds and santander. instead of using an extra layer for a transfer they use a pin code, but instead of having to use a calculator type piece of hardware they send you a one time passcode via your home or mobile phone.
Suits me fine and is still as secure as other methods.

I find that having overcomplicated layers of security and then writing it down is a bit of a paradox to be honest.

Ah well. There's not much out there for you.

Online banking is a pain now. Barclays is the best as can use phone as the card reader.

Why can't they at least have a similar format - its annoying when for one site you need a 6 number password, on another its 8 characters, on another its 8 but has to have a capital. I have to keep a written record... hardly secure!
As already mentioned, KEEPASS. Master password to open Keepass and then all you other passwords stored inside it in various categories of your choosing.

For instance I have WORK and HOME section and then banking, forums, internet, etc sub categories.
You can also set it to type in your username and password for you on most sites.
it'll also generate random passwords of whatever length you want, with without numbers, symbols etc.

Anoterh alternative that i personally preferred is lastpass. a slightly more expensive one is 1password, and that also gets good reviews.

But for heavans sake, make sure your 'master password' is a good one, and one you haven't used ANYWHERE else or have stored in a plaintext file on your computer somewhere.

But any of those mentioned will be vastly more secure than having to either remember a password which makes it quite simple and hence insecure or even worse, writing them down somewhere!

KEEPASS is free. And no I dont work for them or anything. Just find it useful.

My whole life is on Keepass. I keep a copy of the database on dropbox, so I can access it from my tablet - using Keepass2Android.

That way I can store encrypted copies of passports, Health cards visas etc etc. as a backup in case any get misplaced when travelling.

I'm wandering off the reservation a bit, but once you start using for passwords other uses come to mind.

Many other password managers out there, I assume they all have similar features

although I am with Santander, I hate there online banking,

but

my fiancé is with Barclays and there online banking is simply awesome, so easy to use and there mobile app is also very very good.

I have a Barclay's credit card and do that online, and that also is simply amazingly simple and easy to use, again there mobile/tablet app is just awesome.

all of which other than first direct (no experience of them) are all monkeys.

I've just switched to Halifax (been with them around 2 months now, used the switching service 2 weeks ago) and the service and staff have been extremely good.

Yes, Its a bit of a mystery when you consider that First Direct is a part of HSBC and yet the ratings (according to Which) are so far apart.

Had the same account with Lloyds for 31 years.
Never had a single issue.

theyre so far up my poop list, they have snow on.

I suppose, like most things, it's each to their own.
Experience is a big factor...positive and negative! (y)

indeed, im sure there are people that never had any problems. however after many problems and downright rudeness we're phasing them out of our finances.

they're now in the same bracket of my opinion as vodafone.

Oh b****r....I'm with them too...:ROFLMAO:

without going in to too much detail, lloyds customer service has been shocking. theyve lied and been rude to us, when we moved house it took them MONTHS to update our address correctly. halifax couldnt organise a pee up in a brewery, another one that couldnt seem to update their records successfully. santander again poor customer service, they were (if not still) one of the last not to do fast transfers.

It took me 5 mins online. I just went onto the Barclays Bank website and updated it.

eh, barclays? halifax require a paper address change form to be handed in to branch. lloyds apparently have several different places on their system for your address, so if you change it online it still may results in important paperwork going to your old address.

To be honest it's not difficult, if you don't people shouldn't be going anywhere near a computer or technology !

maybe i should give up the day job..
