Great shot Simon and I love the Bokeh, I'm pinning the class swot sign on you back this week, nice one.

Lovely shot, well taken and nicely timed too, the blurred background is spot on.

You'e gotta love meerkats - so photogenic!

I'm also liking the bokeh - just a shame he wasn't looking directly at you.

I love this Simon. :)

You've caught a great expression on his face, and I like the fact that he's not playing to the camera, but looking over your shoulder at........ ???

Excellent interpretation of the theme, too.

Oh - and did I say I like it?:clap:

Glad to hear you're enjoying the D300. How does it compare with the D700 - is it difficult to switch from one to the other?

Jean

As I scrolled from the bottom up to see the shot I laughed out loud - what a superb portrait :)

Simply wonderful :)

Very nice, looks like a good combination of lens and camera. Shame he's not looking at you but as you say, not a simple shot to get.

Mark

Cheers :)

Very nice...I just love to oof background...spot on for this great subject...excellent shot...:notworthy:

It took a while to get this including a couple of blasts against a fence line which didn't work right. One tip for anyone is focus on the background as you are taking the shot - it really pays dividends.

Beautiful shot with a very clinical background. Looks great.

Not sure if the clinical background is a compliment or not  but I'll take it as one :D Even though I'll be the first to admit this is not the most artistic shot I've done ;)

Cheers, at least it wasn't the kick me one again

Thanks :)

I agree but then I think that this is more of a "I'm too important to look at you" kind of pose

I love this Simon.

Jean

Glad you like it Jean. The D300 is a different beast than the D700, I got it for the DX crop factor and FPS rate being higher than my S5 Pro. It's quite close to the D700 in handling (the buttons on the back are pretty much the same). However the D700 appears to have fixed some minor niggles I have with the D300 (e.g. D300 doesn't have the Auto D-Lighting feature and the D300 squeeks when it cleans the sensor).

As I scrolled from the bottom up to see the shot I laughed out loud - what a superb portrait

Simply wonderful

Cheers, I'm really pleased with that response :)

Well Simon, that's kinda blown my meerkat shot outta the water, and I now have a serious case of glass envy :p

The shot is super, love that you can see every detail of his fur, and the dappled background works great too. Meerkats do not make eye contact very often, expecially if you are close!!

spot on

Very good image Simon.

Thanks, good tip for the cold water thing I'll try that next time.

P.S. Are you sure the bunny form is Dark Chocolate? I thought the bunnies were milk :thinking:QUOTE]

I'm pretty sure you can get them in both. don't think anyone I know would buy me milk choc :D

Sorry I missed your Dark shot Simon :( I like the composition and also know how hard it is to shoot on black granite ;), and my chocolate tasted so nice I went and bought another bar

As for Simple, brilliant shot :clap::clap:

Glad to see you back on form ;)

Fairy snuff, you learn something new everyday I'll keep an eye out.

Glad to see you back on form

Cheers, it's good to be back (not sure my Linear shot will be in the same class though)

great stuff Simon, great expression well caught

Thanks :)

This week was my first weekend event of the year so I had very little time to get a fun shot in as I was busy preparing for it. I am glad to report though I managed it :D

Basically I got this shot at the hotel I was staying in on the Saturday night. I looked down this long corridor of rooms and thought Linear.

Things I learned this week.

1) regardless how hard you try it's very very difficult to get dead centre in a corridor to the symmetrical thing.
2) there is quite a bit of edge distortion on the 24-70 on a D700, but PTlens does a stunning job of correcting it.

Very good Simon (I took something similar to this as one of my possible shots), it fits the theme well, and makes me wonder what's in the light at the end of the tunnel corridor. The symmetry if very good, and is enhanced by the oddity of the lone fire extinguisher (if that makes sense...)

Well done, Simon. Apart from the fire extinguisher, it's quite featureless and I think the mono treatment highlights that very well. The ceiling light half way down the corridor leads the eye right through to the opening at the end.

I'm with you on the difficulty of getting perfect symmetry - this week's topic wasn't as easy as it might have sounded!

I hope your event went well. :)

Jean

Just seen your Simples entry, what can I say - Simple indeed :D

And I do like your Linear, very lined filled corridor indeed, nice idea!

Whos said your Linear wouldn't be up to scratch this week :nono:

I really like this one and the B&W conversion really suits it :clap:

I went to the other extreme and used my 70-200 to get a similar outdoors shot this week.

PS I didn't get the email with this week's challenge

Got to be honest I'm not finding the corridor itself all that inspiring but I am loving your composition and how you have thought about all the little elements. The lights / fire extinguisher are all positioned perfectly. Nice work :clap:

Good shot mate.

Things I learned this week :-

- hotel corridors, luggage trollies and a mate to push you very quickly make very good bobsleigh runs!
- never to let Simon near glass vases with luggage trollies!

;)

Makes perfect sense for me - I think with out it there would be no interest in the photograph.

Cheers, the week's theme did pose some challenges :D

The event went quite well although no where near as good (in terms of returns) as last year but I think I'll put that down to 3 things

  • Weather - it rained on the Sunday when the walk was over so lots of people went home rather than viewing and buying photos.
  • Novelty - Last year we were a novelty (printing on site) but this was our second year.
  • Financial climate - even with the 3 for 2 deal and a couple of lower priced items (keyrings), I suspect people were a bit more careful with their spending (Plus there were less people there overall - at least I thought so)

Just seen your Simples entry, what can I say - Simple indeed

And I do like your Linear, very lined filled corridor indeed, nice idea!

Cheers, it was a kind of grab shot :D

Well I'm too modest to say anything else ;) and the email was forgotten about :shake: but I have rectified that :D

I think it's very difficult to make a coridor inspiring, but I'm glad you like the composition.

nice idea Simon and it looks central to me

Cheers, It has been corrected a little in photoshop to try and even it up, it still not perfect though.

Good shot mate.

I completely agree with the the bobsleigh run thing, however it helps if you mate can steer the thing correctly crashing in to a wall at speed is not fun when your mate has all the "control" :p

P.S. I'll try to pop in and check out some of the other attempts at the theme but i've been a bit busy for the last couple of days reviewing and uploading the photos of the event to the website (1400 of them over 2 days, down from 2800 though )

Hey Simon, sorry for the late comments, been revising!!!

The Linear shot works well for me, it sums up the essence of staying in a hotel!

I think Jean said featurless, I like that, and the way the smears on the walls and the muck on the carpet have been highlighted add up to a place to lay your head, yet couldn't be less homely if it tried.

Great capture.

Sorry I missed this Simon, a good interpretation of the theme. I know what you mean about getting a symmetrical shot, I tried something similar with a slide and failed miserably!

Well this was a tough week wasn't it. I was invited to attend my Uncle's 80th birthday celebration and take some photos. The intention was to take photos of the day, print on site and pass over an album of images from the day at the end (something I was uniquely qualified to do, apparently)

I was rather hoping to get something better than this, but beggars can't be choosers. I shall leave it up to you to imagine the emotion she's feeling...

Runners Up HERE

Things I learned this week

  • I must start to pay attention to my family - I know I recognised many faces but I knew very few of their names :shake:
  • Emotion is a very tough subject
  • If I lived closer to Bristol I'd have plenty of new work and recommendations :(

No imagination needed Simon, that is a cracker of a shot, at just the right moment caught!
Don't feel you've not lived up to this week's task, I really like it, and it's FILLED with emotion!

Well done

Certainly fits the theme Simon. She looks to be enjoying the day.

:agree: Well done

I think you've caught a lovely pose and her expression is full of emotion - well done

I know what you mean about not knowing family members name - problem is, half of my family I only ever see at funerals or some kind of milestone celebration like an 80th birthday party - and how often do they come around?!

I spent ages talking to someone I thought was a great aunt at my grans funeral only to find out she was not related to me in any way. Nice lady though!

I too love the emoption in this shot, I can't help thinking Hollywood when I look at this too, perhaps its the scarf, glasses and pearls. It reminds me of a film still!!

excellent!

A great capture, certainly couldn't argue with it fitting the theme, nice one.

A great shot, chock full of emotion, spot on timing too, a bit  from me

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm just letting you all know that I'm stepping back from taking the shots for a couple of weeks. I've had a major disaster in my personal life and I don't have the energy to deal with it and a new photo each week (infact I'm not sure I have any energy at all at the moment).

I will be back soon though and I want you all to keep going in my absence.

I will post the new theme for you all each week whilst I'm gone, although there is unlikely to be a photo with it

Sorry to hear this...good luck with whatever is the trouble...

Sorry to hear that Simon:'(, I hope everything works itself out and you are back soon. Take care.( but in a manly way;))
