SimonTALM's 52 for 2010 pt 1 - Week 13 Quad added

What an interesting image - I would never have thought about attacking a fork with a blowtorch - although I really would have relished the opportunity had I thought of it!

Nice interpretation of the theme

Thanks for starting the 52 challenge, it's just the kind of thing I need :)

Sorry Simon, I didn't add any Smiley's to my post and that may have come across in completely the wrong way ... :(... twas supposed to be tongue in cheek...

Thank you, the challenge kind of developed last year and has just exploded this year.

great shot, good start, looking forward to some great images over next 52 weeks

Cheers, I hope I can get at least 1 great image over the 52 weeks ;)

I'm glad about that because that's how I read it

I imagine a lot of other halves are wondering what we're all up to butchering the cutlery and skulking off with odd bits of paraphernalia in order to commit photography

looks like it paid of for you this week Simon, now where's yer pome?

Well I made it to week 2 and here is my poem photograph

p.s. the woman is actually Ophelia as depicted by Millais

Things I learned this week

1) there are some fantastic poems out there (such as this or this) and I should spend a bit more time reading poetry
2) there are real benefits to leaving the camera and images setup until you've checked the images on the computer and made sure that you're happy with them. I went back 4 times to reshoot!
3) You can buy caterpillars from the internet but only between March and September, no good for the 2nd week in January. The original poem I wanted to shoot was
"Whose that tickling my back?" said the Wall,
"It's me!" said the Caterpillar "I'm learning to crawl"

now to check out some of your shots :D

Don't you hate it when someone else wears the same outfit to the party? ;-)

Great, clean image that goes really well with the poem.
Slightly more subtle than the other one (sorry, I forget whose it is) but just as amusing! :-)

great shot, nicely fit's with them poem too..

did you acctually draw the picture of Ophelia for the photo too?

I missed you 1st submission so I've only just viewed it.... bloomin brilliant :)

As for week 2

Great poem and very clever, crisp and clear image - I like, lots.

That's nice... like that a lot. Would have liked to have seen the poem hand written in pencil, but otherwise very nice.

Just found your thread - love both of these shots, really creative!

Loved the abstract nature of the first shot and the second just made me smile! Both really nicely executed.

Only when they look better than me :p

I'd love to say I did but it's actually a copy of one of the original sketches done by Millais that I found and printed

I like that, that's my kind of poem too

There is something great about short, funny poems

Very nice Simon, brings back memories of school for some reason....

I know what you mean

beat ya to it on this one

do like it though nice to see somebody else's ideas on the same poem:clap:

This is one of the things I like about the 52s we have 2 identical thoughts and 2 very different takes. I really like the way you've captured the humerus side to the poem in the sketch.

Week 1 - You must have had fun doing that.... love the colour

Week 2 - He he.... he was one of a kind

Terran

He certainly was

Have you seen my handwriting?

Yet another cracking shot from you Simon

Perfect with the silly poem

Thank you

The sort of reaction I love to read :D

Another good week, Simon. I love silly poems and they don't come any sillier than Spike Milligan. You've illustrated it really well - witty and well-composed. I like the pencil shaving - a good touch. I can only say: :clap::clap:

One of the thing I love about the 52 is the way it extends my education and knowledge.:lol::lol:

Excellent Simon, love the interpretation, and it's done so well

I missed this thread first time around, so catching up on both weeks!

Week 1 - LOVE this shot! So creative, and it sounds like you had fun getting the curves just right... Note to self - must buy a blow torch! Perfectly executed, well done!

Week 2 - I like the crisp feeling of this image, it suits the silliness of the poem well. As 68lbs mentioned, it would have been even nicer with a hand written poem, regardless of what your hand writing looks like ;)

Looking forward to seeing your interpretation of Chopped!

Thank you Jean, The pencil shaving was an element I knew had to be in there to soften the whole thing, just having text, image and pencils I thought would be too hard and pointy (if you know what I mean). I actually picked up the concept from one of the 52 shots I did last year (Learning I think - the one I took a photograph of the dictionary and added a pen)

Excellent Simon, love the interpretation, and it's done so well

Cheers John :)

I take the point about the handwriting of the poem, it was something I orginally thought to do but dismissed it. Perhaps I should have just gone with it. As for this week's theme my brain is on overtime at the moment, I may use it as an excuse to shoot an obvious photo but try a new technique. Not quite sure yet

OK a little "cheesy" but

Things w ot I learned this week

1) Some themes are much harder than others, especially the "easy ones"
2) Lightroom makes you lazy, chopping the photograph and putting the shadows on in photoshop took far too long (which means there must be an easier way)

very nice Simon
and double use of chopped too

original pic looks pretty good
but the end result is top notch!

I like cheese simon. And this one is toasted on a lovely slice of thick bread. You've taken an otherwise run of the mill chopped shot and chopped it perfectly. Love it

Week 2 Great to see a bit of humour linked to a great shot.

Nice idea a little bit of chopped and a little bit of shopped.

Can't get more chopped than this........really cool image.

Very clever and imaginative take on the vegetable approach. Your chopped treatment lifts an already excellent shot into the top rank.:clap:

Missed your poetry Simon (sorry)
And there's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. Love the use of the paper with the sketch and poem printed on it as the main prop and lovely bit of colour from the pencils and shaving.

Chopped : Clever PP. I thought of doing something similar by chopping the image up too, but just didn't pull it off as well as you did.
I think it helps that you had a good shot to start with.

Some themes are much harder than others, especially the "easy ones"

And that is sooooo true!

thats clever.. like the 'chopped and shopped' combination.. the shadows work really well.. and thats some neat chopping going on there!

As above, clever. I like the idea and the execution is on the money.

Oh dear, It's quite pathetic that I haven't stopped by your thread yet Simon. After all, I wouldn't be doing this if you hadn't organised it :)

So...

Curved: Great shot.
Poetry: Great shot.
Chopped: Great shot.

Constructive criticism at its best I hope you'll agree!

Maybe if you took a bad picture, you could get better feedback!

Seriously though, the Poetry shot was very very good. Well lit, simple and uncluttered. Great words, and great interpretation.

Ian.

Very nice simon

Simple yet very effective! Only suggestion would be that it would be cool to reflect the same sort of chopping as is going on in LHS - ie lots of vertical lines.

Nice one!

Simon, Simon, Simon, I can honestly say you don't need this challenge if you keep coming up with the kind of shots you've produced so far :clap::clap:

And yes, the 'easy' themes certainly seem to challenge us more ;)

Couldn't make it too easy could I ;)

Clever twist on the popular chopped veg theme - I like the way you've chopped the photo up too - gives a nice edge to it

Cheers

That was my thoughts, chopped and photo chopped I'm quite pleased how the responses have turned out

Thank you, I'll head over and check out your shot in a minute (I'm totally amazed at the numbers of us shooting the 52s this year)

great pic - now why didn't i think of that!

btw, the piece on the far right is missing some of its drop shadow

Quite right and well spotted I was trying to crop to minimise the white space and clearly I've messed up on the simple stuff.

thats clever.. like the 'chopped and shopped' combination.. the shadows work really well.. and thats some neat chopping going on there!

Helps that I enjoy cooking, TBH, if I hadn't chopped the image you'd see the slices aren't as clean as they appear

As above, clever. I like the idea and the execution is on the money.

Thank you

Week 2 - excellent choice of ditty and well composed representation my good man

Week 3 - 'cheese' is whats missing, got to have cheese with your cucumber, bread just isn't right without it, all a bit snobby.

Real snobby would be just cucumber sandwiches ;)

Hi Simon. This is the first time I have seen your post, There are so many. I love the shot of the fork very imaginative. The second image is nice and sharp and I like the processing idea for your last image. Well done indeed.

Cheers, do stop back,

I'm starting to get a rather large head here :D

Very nice simon

Good point, I did consider that but I didn't think it would be quite right some how. I may give it a go and see

Your 'Chopped' made me smile Clever picture, and well executed!

Cheers

Simon, Simon, Simon, I can honestly say you don't need this challenge if you keep coming up with the kind of shots you've produced so far

You are too kind, I'm quite embarrassed at the lack of effort I've put in so far.

I love this double-chopped take on the theme, Simon. Very clever - and well done on the pp - if it took ages it must have been a learning curve, which is part of what the 52 is all about!
I was also going to say I admire the neatly chopped cucumber slices - they look very thin and consistent - but Mich33 beat me to it! :)
